This former Dancing With The Stars contestant is dealing with some awful news this week. On Monday, James Van Der Beek shared that his wife had a miscarriage that ended up being really scary for their family. On top of how heartbreaking it is to lose that pregnancy, it sounds like it was threatening to Kimberly's health, too.

  • Before James took the stage for his performance on Monday night, he shared the sad news with 'DWTS' viewers.

"My wife Kimberly and I went through every expecting parent’s worst nightmare. We lost the baby. The little soul that we had expected to welcome into our family took a shortcut to whatever lies beyond," James said on the show, according to People

"You never know why these things happen, that’s what I've been telling my kids. All you know is that it brings you closer together, it breaks you open, it opens up your heart, it deepens your appreciation. It makes you more human."

James then went on to dance to Hozier's "Take Me To Church," after sharing that Kimberly had been the one to encourage him to compete after their loss.

Sadly enough, James was also eliminated from the competition that night.

  • He also went on to share the news on Instagram, along with a photo of his wife and daughter in the hospital.

"We’ve been through this before, but never this late in the pregnancy, and never accompanied by such a scary, horrific threat to @vanderkimberly and her well-being," he wrote. "Grateful that she’s now recovering, but we’ve only just begun unpacking the layers of this one."

  • Kimberly Van Der Beek took to Instagram Stories to thank everyone for the support and reveal some scary details about what happened.

"Thank you everyone for all of the love. I don't even know how I'm going to begin to respond to it all. So, I think I'll just have to do it here," Kimberly mentioned in one of many videos shared on Instagram Stories.

"[W]e lost our baby boy ... [and I] almost lost my life," she later added.

We can't imagine what it's been like for James and Kimberly Van Der Beek -- especially because Kimberly was many months into her pregnancy. This has to be so devastating for them.

  • When James initially announced Kimberly's pregnancy, he shared that they'd had miscarriages in the past.

He and Kimberly shared their first ultrasound on DWTS, and part of why they decided to do that was because they knew how precious that moment can be -- and it's not guaranteed. At the time, he wrote:

"@vanderkimberly and I have been through three of those first appointments to discover either no heartbeat, or no baby, and she wanted to share this moment. Miscarriage (a word that needs a replacement - nobody failed to “carry”, these things sometimes just happen) is something that people rarely talk about, and often go through in secret. But there needs to be zero shame around it, or around giving yourself the time and space to grieve."

This would have been Kimberly and James' sixth child, joining Olivia, 9, Joshua, 7, Annabel Leah, 5, Emilia, 3, and Gwendolyn, 1.

  • We'll be thinking of James, Kimberly, and their family.

Losing a baby is something no one should have to go through, especially more than once. We hope they're taking care of themselves -- and each other -- during what has to be a truly difficult time.

Sending all the positive vibes their way.
