Brooke Shields's Reason for Banning Her Daughters From Modeling Is Actually Super Empowering

Some former supermodels seem happy to have their daughters follow them down the runway -- Cindy Crawford and Christie Brinkley come to mind -- but others are less enthusiastic about the idea. Case in point: '80s icon Brooke Shields, who says that she's banned her daughters from the "cutthroat" industry until after they've finished college because she disagrees with the way teen models are used. (Considering the 52-year-old mom starred in The Blue Lagoon when she was just 14, she probably knows what she's talking about!)

Shields, whose daughters are 14 (Rowan) and 11 (Grier), is understandably sensitive to the issue of young girls' being exploited for the sake of fashion and promoting unrealistic standards of beauty.

"We shouldn't just see 15-year-old bodies. I don't want a 15-year-old body. I don't want to look like a little boy,' Shields told Social Life magazine.

"I have curves, and I've worked on my strength."

Good for her! Shields is also concerned (no doubt rightfully so) about the treatment her daughters would likely be subjected to as young models, and how their potentially hectic schedules could distract them from getting their education. (Shields just happens to be a Princeton graduate, in case you didn't know.)

"It's a cutthroat and demoralizing business. Plus, they want you when they want you, and you have to be there for auditions and work, and my kids aren't missing school," she said, adding that her own education was the key to her success in the years following her superstardom as a Calvin Klein model (among other things).

More from CafeMom:

"If I hadn't had the intellectual piece as my friend, I would have been more devoured by an industry that has no loyalty whatsoever. You do think because you've been in the industry all of your life it will be loyal, but it's the antithesis of that."

Sounds like whatever Rowan and Grier decide to do with their lives, their mom will be a solid source of good advice! As for Shields herself, she's actually stepping in front of the camera as a model again for the first time in 37 years -- for Calvin Klein, no less!

One thing's for sure ... Shields has a gorgeous family, and if ever they should decide to step into the spotlight, it'll be waiting.
