Busy Philipps's 'Mom Shoulder' Discovery Is So Relatable, It Hurts

Being a mom can be a real pain in the neck -- and other parts of the body, as mom-of-two Busy Philipps knows! The 37-year-old actress has apparently been suffering from some pretty serious shoulder pain as of late, and she couldn't figure out the cause ... until she caught sight of her overburdened self in the mirror and had an epiphany: Oh yeah, she's a mom!

Philipps snapped a selfie mid-realization, and it's a photo any mom (or pack mule) will find familiar. Trudging up the stairs with about a billion bags slung over her shoulder and another couple in her hand for good measure, a grimace of resignation on her face. As a mother of three, I can feel her pain just looking at it!

"I'm getting an MRI on my right shoulder tomorrow, because I've been having so much pain for the last several months," she writes. "Everyone has been asking how I injured it and I don't have a good answer. BUT THEN I JUST CAUGHT MY REFLECTION WALKING UP TO MY HOUSE. I THINK I FIGURED IT OUT GUYS. I'M A MOM."

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes! As moms, we likely don't even realize how far we overextend ourselves physically. If we're not literally wearing our children on our backs (or our fronts), we're picking them up and putting them down. Plus, we're carrying their diaper bags and backpacks and groceries and car seats and baskets filled with dirty clothes and who knows what else. And because we quite frankly don't have the time (or the patience) to make multiple trips from the car to the house and back again (or the laundry to the bedroom and on and on), we end up carrying a lot of those things all at once. (Also, in my experience, as Philipps seems to be doing, we often carry a lot of those things on one side. Which is probably a bad idea?)

I seriously love that Philipps is sharing her "mom shoulder" selfie. We just don't talk about this particular hazard of motherhood enough. We grit our teeth and toss back yet another dose of ibuprofen and hobble around, living our mom lives in varying degrees of discomfort like it's NBD.

Given that Philipps is getting an MRI, I'm guessing her pain is pretty severe ... and I'm not surprised. I've been to the emergency room several times in my parenting career for back/shoulder/neck pain. All that wear and tear is no joke! But while I'd love to say that I've learned my lesson and now treat my back and shoulders with more care, well, I don't. It's just not practical.

So, what's a mom to do? Laugh, I guess. Thank you, Busy Philipps, for helping us to do just that! And good luck with the MRI!
