Since their shocking split in September (can you believe it's been that long already?), Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have done an impressive job of keeping many of the details of their private lives, well, private. But now that Angelina Jolie is finally opening up about their split, it's clear the subject is still incredibly raw -- and that the actress is still struggling to stay positive for her kids.

Jolie directly addressed her separation from Pitt for the first time while speaking with BBC World News' Yalda Hakim in Cambodia about her new movie, First They Killed My Father (a true account of the Khmer Rouge genocide as seen through the eyes of a child).

When prodded about the "incident" that preceded the couple's parting of ways (an alleged altercation between Pitt and eldest son Maddox on a private plane which resulted in the actor's being investigated for child abuse), Jolie immediately became visibly upset, though she managed to keep her composure.

"I don't want to say very much about that, except to say it was a very difficult time," she said. "And we are a family and we will always be a family, and we will get through this time and hopefully be a stronger family for it."

"Many, many people find themselves in this situation," she added. "My whole, my family ... we've all being through a difficult time. My focus is my children, our children ... and my focus is finding this way through. We are and forever will be a family. I am coping with finding a way through to make sure that this somehow makes us stronger and closer."

Wise words. As so many moms know, the only way to get through the pain of a divorce is to keep on going -- and to make sure that everyone supports each other as much as possible. Family means so many different things to so many different people, but the one thing it should always mean is love -- and it's obvious that even though the Jolie-Pitt clan is currently struggling, sticking together and making sure that everyone feels loved is still top priority:

"It's been a difficult few months. Right now, I'm going through a moment when just everybody's in my room," she said. "Two dogs, two hamsters, and two children at the moment. It's wonderful. But, usually, I just wake up trying to figure out who's going to get [the] dog out, who's going to start the pancakes and did anybody brush their teeth."

So sweet, but of course still sad. Her words are hopeful, but her face shows the heartbreak that's just under the surface:

Of course we don't know Angie and Brad personally, but it's still tough to watch that clip and not wish that things could have turned out differently for them. And, if we're honest, we have to admit that we're still dying of curiosity about that "incident" -- and what happened to make their once seemingly perfect marriage go south. Pitt was cleared of the child abuse allegations against him (which is good news for everybody), but after all the crazy rumors that swirled around the family for months, it's hard to even speculate about the truth.

Then again, it's not really our place to speculate -- even though speculating about the personal lives of celebrities is pretty much a national pastime. The important thing is that this family is, as Jolie says, becoming "stronger and closer." The path will be a long and oftentimes challenging one, but every step they take together will bring them that much closer to healing.
