This actress is celebrating a couple of firsts -- and she couldn't be happier. Katherine Heigl is showing off her first son, Joshua Bishop Kelley Jr., on the cover of People, and he is the absolute cutest. The 38-year-old, already mom to Naleigh, 8, and Adalaide, 4, who were adopted, seems to have thoroughly enjoyed her "totally unexpected" but "thrilling" first pregnancy, which offers hope to women who believe giving birth may not be in their future.

This gorgeous little one arrived just in time for the holidays and his mom and dad's 10th wedding anniversary. Born on December 20, Joshua Jr. weighed 7 lbs, 15 oz. Take a look at this sweet guy and his overjoyed mama:

Wow, he couldn't get any more adorable. And what's even more special is that it sure sounds like he was much-wanted -- but completely unexpected.

"It was a surprise! I knew I wanted to expand our family, I knew I wanted to have more children," Heigl told People. "I just didn't know how we were going to go about that."

Back in June, the former Grey's Anatomy star shared her exciting announcement on her lifestyle blog, Those Heavenly Days:

The whole pregnancy thing is new to me but the thrill of having a baby is not. We've known for a while that we wanted to add to our family and frankly didn't really care how we chose to do that. We were considering adoption again, fostering, or pregnancy if possible. Seeing as I have never been pregnant and as my OB/GYN reminded me last year, I'm of advanced maternal age, I wasn't sure pregnancy was even in the cards for us. Turns out it was very much in the cards!

You know the actress isn't feigning surprise either, as she recalled that she'd just started working on her new CBS series Doubt when she found out she was expecting.

She told People: "I'll be totally honest, my first reaction was 'Oh s---.' But now we have a new normal, and I have to give myself a break in order to get used to it."

Sometimes that's just how life is -- like when you're not looking for a new relationship and you find "the one." When you're thinking pregnancy may not be in the near future, you focus on other things, and suddenly you're "knocked up."

And Heigl isn't sure she's ready to stop at her party of five.

"I'd get pregnant again, and I still am very inspired by adoption," said Heigl, whose sister Margaret was adopted from Korea. "I also have been thinking a lot about fostering. It's all up in the air. And I'm okay with that!"

We love her laid-back attitude and the positivity she shares with those trying to become parents and exploring their options. Isn't it when you take the pressure off yourself that the best things happen for you? It's probably the best advice any of us could follow.

We wish this growing family all the best!
