The non-profit group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has a long history of enlisting celebrity activists. From vegetarians and animal rights champions to "reformed" fur wearers and budding environmentalists, celebs have long appeared in PETA's print advertisements and videos. Many of these celebrities are often featured nude, which has led to criticism from feminist groups that claim these images objectify women and rely on oppressive "sex sells" ideologies. Others claim it's empowering when women choose to flaunt their bodies in order to convey a message dear to their hearts. Whatever your personal feelings on PETA's nude ads, there's no denying that they're effective in drawing attention.

You might be surprised by some of the stars who've gone nude for the cause. From Taraji P. Henson to Christina Applegate, here are some of the celebs who dared to bare it in the name of animal rights.

In a festive, holiday-themed PETA e-card circulated in November 2007, the former Married with Children star got a little naughty, posing nude — well, except for some jolly red gloves featuring green faux fur trim— albeit for a very nice cause. Applegate's e-card was designed to discourage shoppers from gifting fur and to, instead, explore cruelty-free faux fur options.

Actress Taraji P. Henson, star of FOX's smash hit Empire, stripped down in a 2011 PETA ad aimed at raising awareness about the suffering incurred by animals at the hands of fur traders. "We’re not just talking about a full-length fur coat,” Henson said in an accompanying PSA video. "[The] fur on your gloves or on your jacket — what goes into making that little piece of fur ripped my heart out.” Maybe Henson could persuade her fur-loving alter ego Cookie Lyon to be just as committed to the cause?

"It’s the single-most important and helpful decision I have ever made," Silverstone wrote of becoming vegan in an online testimonial. "I feel physically and spiritually better than I could have ever imagined knowing that I am doing everything I can to reduce animal suffering with simple lifestyle choices like being vegan."

Then, with her signature candor, the fur-eschewing star quipped, "I hope fur wearers get bitten in the ass by the same kind of animal they wear on their back."

Wearing nothing but body paint, actress Maggie Q channeled Mother Earth in a 2013 PETA ad that proposed a vegan diet as a means through which to fight climate change. The campaign was released after a United Nations report revealed that the meat industry was a major culprit behind our global environmental problems. Of having the world painted on her skin, Maggie Q said, "It was an interesting metaphor for the way I feel all the time: the weight of the world depends on us, it depends on our choices."

Though she once wrapped herself in luxurious mink and fox coats, talk show host Wendy Williams decided to ditched to go faux after PETA activists explained how animals were electrocuted and skinned alive for their pelts. Showing her commitment to the cause, Williams put her own bare skin on display in a 2012 PETA ad campaign emblazoned with the words "I'd rather go naked than wear fur." The sexy photo had fans asking Williams, "How you doin'?" in admiration.

In 2008, outspoken reality TV star Khloe Kardashian stripped down for an anti-fur PETA ad. Four years later, however, the Strong Looks Better Naked author broke ties with PETA after her sister Kim was flour-bombed while wearing fur by an activist with ties to the organization. “I’ve been a vocal supporter of PETA for a long time but I have also been very vocal about anti-bullying, so this was a huge disappointment for me,” Khloe wrote on her website at the time. Despite her rift with PETA, Khloe continues her animal rights activism and only wears faux fur.

It's doubtful that actress Nia Long would ride the subway in New York City in the buff, but that was the setting chosen for the Brooklynite's 2009 "I'd Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur" PETA ad. Though some criticized the ad for being so heavily retouched, Long's intentions were laudable. "When I became a mother, I started to really understand the importance of all living creatures in a way that I didn't ever think about before," Long said of her decision to join forces with PETA.

Actress Jenna Dewan-Tatum was the most charming of snakes in a 2013 PETA ad, slithering atop a tree trunk, her nude body covered in painted scales. The star of The Witches of East End hoped the campaign would shed light on the violent way in which snakes, alligators, crocodiles, and lizards are killed for their exotic skins, thereby prompting folks to "leave wildlife out of their wardrobes."

Eva Mendes was no stranger to going nude on camera, appearing au naturel in films like Training Day and We Own The Night, so the Cuban-American actress had no qualms about shedding her clothing for a good cause: a December 2007 anti-fur PETA advertisement. "Some people still see wearing fur as glamorous and a sign of prosperity," Mendes mused. "Personally I think wearing a baby chinchilla says, 'I’m ignorant,' versus saying 'I’m a badass.'”

Vowing to clean out her closets of any fur trappings, the Skinnygirl CEO said, "Me ever wearing fur is being ignorant because it's indirectly being cruel to an animal."
