Jillian Michaels Allows 4-Year-Old Son to Get His Ears Pierced -- & Her Reason Is Interesting

Jillian Michaels allows 4-year-old to pierce earsThis celebrity mom isn't letting gender norms influence her parenting. Still, a recent decision may raise some eyebrows. Celebrity trainer Jillian Michaels allowed her 4-year-old son, Phoenix, to pierce his ears because she didn't want to tell him "that's for girls."

While I admire that she's not setting a double-standard that could lead to resentment between the little guy and his big sis, Lukensia, 6, who recently had her ears pierced, that seems a little bit young.

He's adorable and looks quite happy with his decision in this selfie, but still...

More from CafeMom:

Certainly, in many cultures babies have their ears pierced within hours or days of their birth. And while pediatricians agree that there really isn't a right or wrong age do it, they often advise waiting until the child can properly care for the piercings on his or her own.

But, at the risk of sounding old-fashioned, both ages 4 and 6 seem a little on the early side. It's wonderful that Michaels is letting Phoenix express himself and be who he is, but where do you draw the line? What if he decides he'd like a tattoo? Or, a body piercing?

More from CafeMom:

It completely makes sense that she doesn't want to tell him it's a "girl" thing, but she could've simply said, "When you're 6, if you still want to get them pierced, then you can!" and avoided the gender issue altogether.

Maybe both kids could've tried some clip-ons, which are a fun way to test out the look without the permanence of piercing.

Still, it's not a huge deal. If Phoenix -- or his sister -- decide they no longer want to wear earrings, they can simply take them out and allow the holes to close.
