Jennifer Garner Inspires Me to Hold My Head High as a Single Mom

Jennifer Garner

Have you ever caught yourself admiring a celebrity mom from afar, whether it be in a movie or magazine article, and thinking to yourself, "Wow, I wonder if she's really as cool and down-to-earth as she seems to be; if so, we'd totally be besties in real life"? (Yeah, me too.) A few years ago, I actually had the pleasure of sitting down and chatting with Jennifer Garner, and all my celebrity mom crush dreams came true in a matter of seconds.

OMG, people. Up until that point, I had always adored her, and I pretty much expected her to be super sweet and real, but talking with her for a few minutes seriously felt like sitting at a table chatting about life with someone I'd known for years -- she's that "normal."

We talked about getting the kids to eat healthier meals. We talked about her impressive charity efforts. And we even talked about how important it is to put down our phones and be present in our kids' lives even though letting go of the device can be quite difficult at times.

And from that day forward, I have always admired Jennifer in a way that's different from other high-profile moms I watch from afar.

While she's really not the type of famous mom who is super vocal about her accomplishments, there are so many reasons that Jennifer should be celebrated and serve as a source of inspiration for all moms who are just doing the best they can every day to be the best people they can be.

She has passion for great causes: Jennifer is an Artist Ambassador for Save the Children, and has supported its efforts for several years. She's even on the board of trustees, and works to help make sure that all children have an access to education, which helps break the cycle of poverty. When telling People about her efforts with Save the Children, Jennifer said:

In my new role with Save the Children, I hope to make an even bigger difference in the lives of children right here in America and around the world. All children, whether they are born into poverty or affluence, have the right to grow up healthy, learn, and make something of their lives.

She handled her divorce with dignity: As a recently divorced mom myself, I can tell you firsthand that it's not easy to take a leap of faith and completely start your life over from scratch. I can only imagine how much more difficult it must have been for Jen, given her very public divorce from Ben Affleck, amid claims that he was having an affair with their nanny. When Jen finally broke her silence about the divorce in a Vanity Fair interview, she kept it classy, saying:

It was a real marriage. It wasn't for the cameras. And it was a huge priority for me to stay in it. And that did not work.

Jen went on to add:

Let me just tell you something. We had been separated for months before I ever heard about the nanny. She had nothing to do with our decision to divorce. She was not part of the equation. Bad judgment? Yes. It's not great for your kids for [a nanny] to disappear from their lives.

She has the whole co-parenting thing down: Since Ben is currently filming a movie in London, Jen and the kids are living across the pond too, presumably in an effort to keep things as normal as possible even though the family dynamic has changed. And prior to that, they were still sharing the same home back in California. They've even been on vacation together since announcing their split.

Despite whatever ultimately caused the breakdown of their marriage, Jen and Ben have managed to put the needs of their children first and foremost, and are setting such a great example for other moms and dads who are trying to navigate the new territory of co-parenting. I know personally how hard it can be to put on a happy face all the time, so I can't help but find Jennifer's relationship with Ben to be pretty inspirational.

It will be interesting to see what the future has in store for this lovely lady, but whatever chapter is next in her book, it's sure to be a positive one. Among the many things Jennifer has taught us, walking through life with a smile on your face and your head held high even when you get dealt a bad hand is one lesson she can always be proud of teaching those who admire her. And something tells me that as far as Jen is concerned, the best is yet to come.
