Rosie O'Donnell's Off-Color Autism 'Joke' Leaves Parents & Advocates Enraged

Rosie O'Donnell

Comedians are known for adding a few off-color remarks in their bit -- and while this likely wouldn't make too many people upset, quite a few are questioning Rosie's choice of words. Known for speaking her mind, actress Rosie O'Donnell's joke about autism has parents and advocates of the autism community wondering why it's a laughing matter.

(Don't ask me, I don't know.)

The 53-year-old mom of five was recently a performer at the Fund for Women's Equality & the ERA Coalition's A Night of Comedy with Jane Fonda, where the debacle occurred.

Cracking jokes about her kids, Rosie landed in hot water when she threw autism into her bit.

"I needed to remind myself that I actually do love children, because I would trade each teen for autistic triplets. I’m just saying I would."

Even though Rosie apologized for her remarks, it looks like the damage is done.

Not only did the National Autism Association reportedly call O'Donnell "a piece of dog s---" for her comments, but many had no problem taking to Twitter to express their frustrations.

It also looks like Rosie had fans on her side, who were able to cut her some slack for making a parenting joke.

Part of me feels bad for her, given all the craziness that's been happening in her life. I'm sure it wasn't her intention for her "joke" to leave a sour taste in people's mouths. But, it did.

Maybe she thought that her humor would be okay, considering Rosie has two kids on the spectrum?

As much as I love comedy, I can certainly see how this is offensive to parents -- though, I don't think calling someone "a piece of dog s---" is appropriate.

Oh, Rosie.
