Having children is not a responsibility to take lightly, especially when living a busy life with a demanding career. It's no wonder that some celebrities initially thought parenthood was best left off their life’s “To Do” list, but with time and changing circumstances, had a change of heart.

Check out these celebs that said they’d never have kids -- whether it was because they were dedicated to their careers, had strained relationships with their own parents, or just never felt it was their destiny -- and then eventually took the plunge.

Emmy-nominated actress Zooey Deschanel used to be adamant about not wanting children: "I like being around kids, but it was never an ambition, something, like, I need. I like working," she once told Marie Claire. However, in August 2015, the New Girl became a new mom after giving birth to daughter Elsie Otter.

Before getting together with Ryan Gosling, Eva Mendes was in a long-term relationship, and not once did she get the urge to procreate. In fact, in 2007, she said she'd rather get a dog. "I can't imagine [motherhood]. I'm too selfish but I really want to get a pet pug." Maybe something about Gosling made her say "Hey, girl" to daughter Esmeralda Amada, who was born in 2014.

  • Simon Cowell

In 2013, the tabloids exploded when Simon Cowell got a close friend's wife pregnant. Equally shocking: The X-Factor judge had been quite vocal about not wanting to be a father. One divorce and one pregnancy later, Cowell has now embraced fatherhood, sharing pictures of his son, Eric, and gushing: "He and I communicate very well because we basically like the same things -- Scooby Doo, Disney movies, laughing at the dogs."

A whole lot can change in nine years: Just ask Kelly Clarkson. When the American Idol alum was 26, she said bluntly that she had "no desire" to have children because "I would not be a good mother. My job is too selfish." Fast forward to 2014, when Clarkson, now married to Brandon Blackstock, became mommy to daughter River Rose, then one year later, announced a second pregnancy.

He's the cutie with the rocker name -- Axl --  but there was a time when his mommy, Fergie, and Josh Duhamel didn't want the lifestyle changes that come with being parents. "We like each other," Fergie once said. "We like hanging out together and we have fun." Guess now they're down with family fun.

Hot Lost alum and Colony star Josh Holloway and his wife, Yessica Kumala, knew they wanted to live a life full of travel and freedom -- sans children -- even before they got married in 2004. Living legend Mariah Carey wasn't the kind of kid who dreamed of being a mommy one day. "I remember being a little girl and going, 'I don't think I'm going to have babies when I grow up,' and for a while I was probably convinced of that, and I just realized things change," she told ET Canada in 2014. Carey is now the mommy to 4-year-olds, son Moroccan and daughter Monroe.

Pink's tumultous relationship with her mother made her doubt she'd want to take on the role herself. Husband Carey Hart helped change her outlook as "he always wanted kids," she said in 2013. "Then we did and and now it's like, 'F***, this is so rad.' It's more important than anything we've done," she added. Pink credits their daughter Willow Sage with helping her move past her issues with her own mother.

Actress and bestselling author Jenny Mollen, wife of actor Jason Biggs, wrote in an essay for Cosmopolitan that she was "never the girl who yearned for children." "I pretended to be interested in other people's kids, but that was obviously just an act." She thoroughly changed her tune when the couple welcomed baby boy Sid in 2014.

Here's a novel reason not to have kids: They're bad for the environment, along with cars, meat, and un-xeriscsped lawns -- or so said Mad Men alum Vincent Kartheiser. Now, his wife Alexis Bledel is reportedly pregnant with their first child. Do we detect some sort of carbon offset scheme in the works?

  • Scarlett Johansson

No, thanks. That was Scarlett Johansson's attitude when it came to having kids. Not long after divorcing Ryan Reynolds, the in-demand film star said starting a family is "not important to me." Then the star fell for French magazine editor Romain Dauriac and had daughter Rose Dorothy, in 2014. Now, "the feeling of joy I have is explosive," she says.

  • Hugh Grant

Two of actor Hugh Grant's relationships -- with Elizabeth Hurley and Jemima Khan -- ended partially because he didn't want to settle down and have kids. But being uncle to a tribe of nieces and nephews opened his mind to the possibility. Then, at age 53, he became father to three kids by two lovers within a span of 15 months. Way to make up for lost time.
