Check out these celebs that said they’d never have kids -- whether it was because they were dedicated to their careers, had strained relationships with their own parents, or just never felt it was their destiny -- and then eventually took the plunge.

Emmy-nominated actress Zooey Deschanel used to be adamant about not wanting children: "I like being around kids, but it was never an ambition, something, like, I need. I like working," she once told Marie Claire. However, in August 2015, the New Girl became a new mom after giving birth to daughter Elsie Otter.

Before getting together with Ryan Gosling, Eva Mendes was in a long-term relationship, and not once did she get the urge to procreate. In fact, in 2007, she said she'd rather get a dog. "I can't imagine [motherhood]. I'm too selfish but I really want to get a pet pug." Maybe something about Gosling made her say "Hey, girl" to daughter Esmeralda Amada, who was born in 2014.

  • Simon Cowell

In 2013, the tabloids exploded when Simon Cowell got a close friend's wife pregnant. Equally shocking: The X-Factor judge had been quite vocal about not wanting to be a father. One divorce and one pregnancy later, Cowell has now embraced fatherhood, sharing pictures of his son, Eric, and gushing: "He and I communicate very well because we basically like the same things -- Scooby Doo, Disney movies, laughing at the dogs."

Living legend Mariah Carey wasn't the kind of kid who dreamed of being a mommy one day. "I remember being a little girl and going, 'I don't think I'm going to have babies when I grow up,' and for a while I was probably convinced of that, and I just realized things change," she told ET Canada in 2014. Pink's tumultous relationship with her mother made her doubt she'd want to take on the role herself. Husband Carey Hart helped change her outlook as "he always wanted kids," she said in 2013. "Then we did and and now it's like, 'F***, this is so rad.' It's more important than anything we've done," she added. Pink credits their daughter Willow Sage with helping her move past her issues with her own mother.

Here's a novel reason not to have kids: They're bad for the environment, along with cars, meat, and un-xeriscsped lawns -- or so said Mad Men alum Vincent Kartheiser. Now, his wife Alexis Bledel is reportedly pregnant with their first child. Do we detect some sort of carbon offset scheme in the works?

Two of actor Hugh Grant's relationships -- with Elizabeth Hurley and Jemima Khan -- ended partially because he didn't want to settle down and have kids. Way to make up for lost time.
