Kendra Wilkinson's Second Pregnancy Left Her With Uncomfortable Side Effect

Kendra Wilkinson may be known for her rockin' body, but being a mom of two has taken its toll. After her first child, she confessed she struggled with postpartum depression; her second pregnancy resulted in a different problem: Kendra Wilkinson has an umbilical hernia.

So what is an umbilical hernia? Well, in an interview with People, Kendra said it's what's keeping her from having a six-pack. Check out more in the video below:

Still, if you're still scratching your head on what an umbilical hernia is, here are the basics that moms need to know. 

"An umbilical hernia is when part of your intestines protrudes through a weak part of the abdominal wall, typically near the belly button area," explains Alison Mitzner, MD, a physician in New York. The result? A tiny yet disturbing bulge under your skin.

Umbilical hernias are most common in infants due to their underdeveloped abdominal muscles; as many as one in six may have one, which often improves on its own in time. Yet 1.5 percent of adults will also suffer abdominal hernias due to exerting outward pressure on their abdomen -- which can happen if you're obese, lifting weights, and yes, pregnant! And the more kids you have, the greater your risk (which explains why Kendra encountered this with her second child rather than her first).

Most times, however, smaller umbilical hernias "do not cause any discomfort, and a physician can just push it back in right in the office," says Dr. Mitzner. Yet occasionally a larger hernia can be painful or result in tissue damage -- so if this is a risk, surgery is an option to suture these muscles closed so the bowels remain inside.

And the best course of action for non-surgical cases? Exercise, actually!

"It can actually be good to do abdominal exercises to strengthen your core muscles," says Dr. Mitzner. Only watch out: Exercise your abdominals the wrong way, and you could do more damage than good.

"Exercises like stomach crunches can actually exert more pressure on the abdomen," warns Dr. Mitzner. And that, gals, can lead to an even BIGGER umbilical hernia!

A better bet are workouts that strengthen your abdomen without forcing you to "push out," like planks. If you suspect you've got an umbilical hernia, consult your ob/gyn for your options.
