Midwives are technically the norm in Britain, and there were midwives present along with royal gynecologist, Dr. Guy Thorpe-Beeston, and retired surgeon gynecologist, Sir Marcus Setchell, for the birth of Prince George. Apparently during his delivery, the Duchess struck up a rapport with midwives Arona Ahmed and her boss, Jacqui Dunkley-Bent, who's a professor of midwifery at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, and decided she also wanted them to be a part of her next birth. According to the Daily Mail, together, Ahmed and Dunkley-Bent delivered Kate's baby girl while a team of surgeons, including Thorpe-Beeston, looked on.

Kate apparently had a birth plan, and knew going in that she wanted to be seen by the midwives before the doctors. While Kate labored with Ahmed and Dunkley-Bent, her team of doctors waited in a room nearby. Once it was "go-time," the doctors came in to make sure everything went smoothly.

The Duchess' labor was reportedly remarkably smooth -- she gave birth "154 minutes" after being admitted to the hospital! She also opted to forgo the epidural, as she did with Prince George. Talk about a strong mama!

From the sound of things, Kate's birth went exactly as she wanted it to. She made a plan, and lucky for her, things went accordingly. Now all she has to do is figure out how to juggle a toddler and a newborn. If I were a betting woman, I'd say everything will go smoothly in that department, too. As a royal insider recently said of Kate's birth: "What the Duchess wants, the Duchess gets."

Are you surprised Kate used midwives?
