As Kate Middleton's due date approaches, the couple says that their royal baby announcement will come electronically, so stay tuned to their Twitter and Instagram pages.

While Prince George's arrival was announced via the traditional way -- a proclamation posted on a easel outside the Buckingham palace -- the second baby will have a mix of traditional and modern reveals.

An aide just announced that when there is news of the birth, a press release will be sent out to anyone covering the report. "A couple minutes later," the announcement, along with the baby's sex, time of birth, and weight, will be posted to the family's  @KensingtonRoyal Twitter and Instagram accounts, and the whole world will be in the know.

This latest development is just the latest sign that the traditional family is getting more modern. And it's definitely getting with the times.

The Pew Research Center reports that 23 percent of online users use Twitter, and 26 percent use Instagram in 2014. That's up almost double from previous years. But the numbers are even higher when we factor in the younger generation. Teen social media use is at its highest point ever: 33 percent of all teens ages 13 to 17 use Twitter and a whopping 52 percent use Instagram.

One quick tweet or gram and the family can reach thousands, and millions, of its fans. Sure beats calling everyone. One tweet can do the trick!

Are you surprised the family is changing its protocol?
