Kelly Clarkson's Post-Pregnancy Health Scare Could Have Ended Her Career

kelly clarksonAll kinds of wacky things happen to your body when you have a baby, but check out what happened to Kelly Clarkson. Just after giving birth to her baby River Rose in June, Clarkson lost her voice. Kelly Clarkson, the singer -- lost her voice! Can you imagine?!?

Fortunately it was temporary. But for a while there, she feared her singing career was dunzo.

Afterwards was the part where I literally had a moment where I cried and drank wine all day. I was like, 'Oh, God, I'm not going to be a singer anymore!' I was bawling to my husband and like, completely hammered, just going, 'Oh my God, it's over, I don't know what I'm going to do. I guess I could do more charity work.' Like, I didn't know what I was going to do.

Of all the things to happen, poor thing! Why, oh postnatal gods, why take away Clarkson's gift of song? Why are you so cruel?

No matter how thrilled we are with our new babies, it's hard to lose parts of ourselves that give us happiness or confidence, even if only temporarily. That's one of the reasons why it can be so devastating when our bodies re-arrange themselves after pregnancy and childbirth.

Show me a woman who's given birth any ol' way and I'll show you a woman who faced an unpleasant surprise in the months after delivery. It took years for my lower spine to feel okay again. One friend's vaginal tear was stitched in a way that caused her pain for years until she had it repaired again. I have a few other friends who were hit with a heartbreaking bout of postpartum depression.

It's tough -- just when you're recovering and getting used to being a new mom -- to also face physical and emotional problems as well. Good thing many of these turn out to be temporary. But I think we can all empathize with Clarkson. The complications definitely don't stop once the pregnancy is over.

Did you face a major physical challenge in the months after giving birth?
