15 Celebrity Moms Who Ate Their Own Placenta

What are Kim Kardashian, Kailyn Lowry and other celebrity moms eating these days to lose weight, sleep better, regulate their mood, and even increase breast milk production? No, it has nothing to do with chia seeds or coconut water -- not even colonics. (Thank goodness that's over.) Today's celeb moms are eating their own placenta. Don't "ewwww" just yet -- eating placenta might just be something that even a non-celebrity mom might want to try.

This isn't a new idea. (And it's not the only unusual thing new parents have been known to do with a placenta after birth. Some moms choose to plant it, cast it into a bookend, or turn it into a healing salve.) But still, eating placenta can elicit some serious reactions from people, from "Gross" to "Best thing I ever did." Which celebrities are taking the charge in this slightly unconventional trend? We've found a few of our favorites who are loud and proud about their passion for placenta.

    After giving birth to twins Kaia Rose and Kane Ren, The Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kim Zolciak didn't just drink a placenta smoothie. She asked her husband, Kroy Biermann, to do the same. Or, well, "ask" might be pushing it. Kim's exact words, as captured on her spin-off show, Don't Be Tardy: "You are drinking the f*&%ing smoothie, Kroy."

    In 2013, after giving birth to her daughter, Rainbow, Playboy model Holly Madison announced on her blog, "This might sound gross but I'm totally planning on having my placenta turned into pills I can take after giving birth."

    After her second son, Lincoln, was born, Teen Mom star Kailyn Lowry dried out her placenta, then put it into capsules that she took daily. She credits her placenta-pill-popping with staving off postpartum depression and helping her sleep better. "I'm not a cannibal," she told The Stir. "It's like a vitamin."

    January Jones jumped on the placenta bandwagon after her son, Xander Dane, was born. The Mad Men star swore that taking the dried placenta capsules gave her more energy.

The pills had such a profound impact on her mood that Alicia's husband, Christopher Jarecki, began calling them her "happy pills."

    Mayim Bialik, star of The Big Bang Theory and author of the attachment parenting book Beyond the Sling, came to Alicia Silverstone and January Jones's defense when they were slammed for eating their placentas. In a blog post called "You're Not Gross!" Mayim admitted she, too, had eaten her placenta in capsule form. "It's good for mammals to eat the placenta and we evolved for that purpose," she wrote.
