Giuliana & Bill Rancic Devastated by Surrogate's Miscarriage

giuliana rancicTerribly sad news for Bill and Giuliana Rancic. The reality star couple recently revealed that Delphine, the surrogate who carried their 21-month-old son Duke for them, recently suffered a miscarriage while carrying their second baby. Delphine was nine weeks along, so close to being in the "safe zone."

In an interview with People, Bill said, "Unfortunately our surrogate Delphine who we love very much had a miscarriage. It's something that we didn't see coming. We were devastated." Bill also kindly expressed how he doesn't want Delphine to feel bad or like she let them down.

The situation Giuliana and Bill are in clearly isn't "the norm" when it comes to miscarriages, but it certainly brings up an interesting point: Being affected by a miscarriage when you weren't the person carrying the child.

In addition to the hormonal issues she's dealing with, when a mother loses a baby, there are very obvious emotional ramifications. She is, physically, the person who lost the baby. She is the one who, possibly, had a D and C. She is the only person who experienced the entire ordeal first-hand. But there are other people involved, as well. In Giuliana and Bill's case, the non-biological parents. And in most other "normal" cases, the father, and perhaps siblings, if the mother was far along enough. Miscarriages don't only affect the woman carrying the baby; they affect everyone who is involved and knew about the pregnancy. It's so easy to solely focus on Mom in these situations, but the truth is, there are numerous people hurting.

Thoughts and prayers to Giuliana, Bill, and Delphine. Hopefully, their adorable son Duke will have a sibling soon, and hopefully Delphine is doing okay and not feeling like she let anyone down.

How do you think miscarriage affects people other than mothers?
