Angelina Jolie Has a Complete Change of Heart About Motherhood

angelina jolie elle magazine cover june 2014When Angelina Jolie first broke onto the Hollywood scene, her edgy, eyebrow-raising persona made her seem like the polar opposite of the maternal, sophisticated icon we know today. Now, Angie herself has admitted to Elle that she "never" really saw herself as a mom. In the June issue's exclusive cover story, the Maleficent actress revealed, "I never thought I’d have children. I never thought I’d be in love, I never thought I’d meet the right person. Having come from a broken home -- you kind of accept that certain things feel like a fairy tale, and you just don’t look for them."

Crazy to think that was the case, and now, she's a mom of six. What's more, you have to wonder how her kiddos feel knowing that their mama "never" thought she'd have them? Is that something a mom should even necessarily admit?

Sure, why not? In fact, a mom owes it to her kids to be honest about her unique path to motherhood. The fact of the matter is that not everyone sees themselves as a parent when they're growing up -- whether it's because they do come from a broken home, like Angelina, or for health reasons, or at the time, they're just not interested in the idea of starting their own family. In spite of that, you may end up becoming a parent.

That said, no kid wants to learn that their mom never saw herself having kids and then also have reason to think she still didn't want them once she had them! So, while moms should feel free to share their truth to their children, the key is to soften the "blow," so to speak, by explaining. We should be honest about how it's normal to want different things at different points in your life. And it's okay to admit that we're not always aware of what life has in store for us.

The bottom-line is that no matter what you thought when you were 12 or 20 or 35 years old, you did become a mom at some point, and you're grateful for it. That's all kids need to hear. And that's something I'm sure that regardless of what Angelina believed in the past, and what she's confessing in the present, her children know very well.

How did you feel about having kids before you had them? If you were like Angelina and never saw yourself as a mom, would you ever admit that to your children?
