Jamie Lynn Spears' 5-Year-Old Daughter Wears Dolce & Gabbana

There's just something about kids in expensive designer clothing that gets my dander up. It's bad enough that they're going to grow out of the expensive duds in no time -- of course, if you can afford it, you're probably not worried about that. But there's already so much materialism in the world -- so much "If you wear this, smell like this, buy this, and drive this, you'll be happy" that I hate seeing that mentality foisted on kids at such a young age. So I guess that's why when I see Jamie Lynn Spears' 5-year-old daughter wearing Dolce & Gabbana, and her mom seemingly quite proud of this achievement, that I want to hurl instead of squeal.

Jamie Lynn posted a pic of her toddler, Maddie, wearing the designer outfit for her fifth birthday, and captioned it:

BirtHdaY gIrL!!! Picked out her bday outfit by herself!! #DolceGabbana shoes #crewcuts #imintrouble.

Well, a child just doesn't happen to pick out Dolce & Gabbana. First off, you have to be in a Dolce & Gabbana store, or another high end store that sells the brand.

It's not that the outfit itself isn't cute and age appropriate -- looks like a gray cardigan, a white shirt, flowered skirt and pink flats. It's just that I imagine it cost about $1000. Granted, Jamie Lynn must have the money (somehow). Maybe auntie Britney paid for it. And of course people can spend their money how they wish.

But surely this is sending the message that designer brands = personal worth. On the other hand, hopefully Dolce & Gabanna pays their garment workers a living wage, unlike many cheap brands.

But I just don't get it. Never will. Maddie will fit into this outfit for six months tops. Wouldn't it have been better to spend $100 on an outfit and donate the other $900 to charity? That would have been a nice message to send to her child.

But, okay, whatever. Maybe I'm being judgy. It's the kid's birthday, let her wear whatever she wants, right? Sure. But if you're gonna Instagram it, I get a say. So that's my say. Put that kid in a nice burlap bag with a belt and call it a day. Joke!

Do you think kids are too young for designer clothes?
