'Teen Mom' Kailyn Lowry's 3-Year-Old Isn't Potty Trained, But the Earth Is Still Spinning, People

Kailyn LowryOf all the many mom competitions, the one over potty training is bound to drive you the battiest. Unfortunately Teen Mom 2 star Kailyn Lowry just found that out the hard way. The mother of 3-year-old Isaac confessed that she's struggling to get her toddler to use the bathroom outside of her house (and while wearing clothes).

She might as well have held up a bright red flag that said "Sanctimommies, pounce!" On came the critics who called Kail out for not having a 3-year-old completely trained on all things toilet.

Allow me to offer Kail -- and every mom struggling through potty training -- a leg up.

When it comes to potty training, there really is no normal.

If you check the parenting books, most milestones have a pretty small range. The average kid will take their first steps sometime between 9 and 18 months. The first word generally comes between 10 and 14 months. (Note, these are approximations!)

Potty training, on the other hand? That can take years! According to the experts, kids can still be wetting the bed at night all the way up to 10 years old. Technically, that means a kid could not be fully potty trained up to 10 years old, and it's completely NORMAL!

If you're a mom looking up potty training because you want to know when the horror will just be over, that can be completely frustrating, but if you think about it, it's a blessing in disguise. There's a lot more wiggle room for parents when there is no normal.

Take the potty training going on at Kailyn's house right now. Isaac is having a tough time, she says:

Having a hard time potty training. Isaac will only go on the potty if we're home & he's naked. We obviously can't do that when we're out.

We've all been there, haven't we? Maybe it wasn't a kid who needed to be naked to go potty but a kid who would only pee in a potty but not poop or a kid who loved going potty when they were out but chose to stick to the diaper at home.

This is why potty training is so frustrating, but it's why parents need to go easy on themselves ... and on their kids.

The mom who criticized Kail claims her stepson and daughter were both fully potty trained at 2. Hey, she could be telling the truth, but it doesn't make her a better mom than the reality star.

Each kid is different. It doesn't mean any of them are weird or that their parents are potty training wrong. It just proves the potty training process is one we need to stop being so darned competitive about.

Trust me.

Sh-t happens eventually.

You just need to trust your instincts as a parent, and your kid will get it!
