Kerri Walsh’s Olympic Secret Confirms the Power of Pregnant Women

Kerry Walsh JenningsThis week Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings revealed a big secret -- she's pregnant with her third child. Not only that, but she was already five weeks pregnant during the Olympic games in London this summer when she wowed the world with her moves.

Talk about pregnant power! She told Matt Lauer on the Today show yesterday, "When I was throwing my body around fearlessly, and going for gold for our country, I was pregnant, and today I'm 11 weeks pregnant."

While she wasn't sure she was pregnant during the Olympics competition, she knew something was off, because she was moody and her period was four days late. Her partner, Misty May-Treanor, guessed she was, and she was correct.

Pretty amazing, right? Both for her and for this kid who's going to be able to say he competed in the Olympics before he (or she) was even born. That's a good conversation starter if there ever was one.

And what a wonderful example of how active pregnant women can be. While doing extreme sports, like base jumping for example,  is a senseless risk when you know you're pregnant, most all other activities, like running, hiking, yoga, and, yes, Olympic volleyball, are fine (with your doctor's okay). Our bodies are made to insulate these babies, and while we have to be careful, we don't have to sit down and put our feet up for the entire gestation period. Nor should we.

Just in case anyone wants to criticize her for putting her baby in danger (because someone always does), Dr. Nancy Snyderman told NBC the risk that Kerry put to herself and the fetus was "zero to none" and that at just five weeks along the fetus would be well protected. “It would take an act of God to dislodge it, not a bump on the tummy, not a dive.”

As for this baby's impact on Kerri's career, rather than slow her down, this third baby just may take her to even greater heights. She said that after each of her other two babies, she's become fitter and stronger, so watch out for her in 2016 when the games hit Rio.

What kind of activities do you/did you do while pregnant?
