Holly Madison Doesn't Deserve Criticism for Choosing Adoption

Holly MadisonHey, remember Holly Madison? She's the ex-Playboy model who earned a certain level of fame from being one of Hugh Hefner's seven official girlfriends in 2001 while appearing on the show The Girls Next Door? (Next door to a plastic surgery center, apparently, since her bust magically expanded from an A-cup to a D during that timeframe.) Madison went on to compete on Dancing with the Stars and starred in her own reality show, Holly's World, but she's currently making headlines for her announcement that she's planning to adopt a child.

Just a month ago, Madison told People that she decided not to renew her contract with Las Vegas's Peepshow in the hopes that she would soon be pregnant. It seems she's changed her plans for how she wants to start a family, however, and it's her reason for choosing adoption over pregnancy that's earning her some bizarre -- and in my opinion, totally unwarranted -- criticism.

Madison, who's 33 and currently dating dating event planner Pasquale Rotella, first told People in June,

I'm not pregnant right now, but if that happened tomorrow I'd be fine with it. I've wanted kids and that's something I'm definitely doing as soon as possible. It is something that the time in my life is right for.

This week she told In Touch that she's started the adoption process through the mentoring service Hold My Hand. She plans to adopt a child from either Africa or South Korea, and she says she's already planning nursery themes.

As for why she decided to pursue adoption, she says her schedule, which is apparently packed with events and theater roles, made pregnancy too difficult:

I love performing in the theater, and you can’t really do that when you’re pregnant.

That seems like a perfectly valid choice to me. I mean, even if she flat-out said she didn't want to be pregnant because she makes her money from having a smoking-hot body -- which seems to me something that's mmmmmaybe a little closer to the truth -- whose business is it other than hers? Still, some people have already raised an eyebrow at her reasoning:

It’s too bad, really, that Holly Madison doesn’t feel she can mix work and pregnancy. (…) I just don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone be so frank about the motive “too busy for pregnancy” before…and I have to wonder if she realizes just how busy she’ll be once baby is brought home?

Well, she IS currently starring in a "striptease spectacular" in Las Vegas, so I can pretty much see how mixing work and pregnancy in this instance might be a little awkward. Her final show is December 30th, so she'll presumably have some flexibility after that, and in the meantime, it sounds like she's really eager to start a family. And who knows, maybe there are other, more private health-related reasons she's not in a position to get pregnant right now.

Besides, in what sane world does a woman get criticized for choosing to adopt a child in need? I swear, it seems like some people are so obsessed with the minutiae of motherhood -- the pregnancy, the mode of childbirth, the contents of a baby's bottle -- they forget about the big picture.

I say bravo to Holly for knowing what she wants and pursuing it in her own way. Whatever path to motherhood she takes, it certainly seems like she's ready for this new stage in her life. Plus, thanks to her relationship with Hef, she surely has plenty of experience changing diapers. (HEY-oh!)

Can you identify with Holly Madison's decision?
