Single Mom Madonna Admits She's Too Soft on Her Kids (VIDEO)

madonna lourdesHuh. I never thought I'd relate to Madonna on a mom-to-mom level, but when I heard her reaction to that now-infamous shot of 15-year-old daughter Lourdes smoking a cigarette, well ... Madge, I totally get where you're coming from. Seriously, we should do coffee sometime.

First of all, not surprisingly, Madonna says she "wasn't very happy" about the picture.

But then the single mom made an admission I found very interesting (as a fellow single mom).

Raising four kids on her own, Madonna says she tries to be a "tough" parent ...

"But honestly, I don't think I'm as tough as I should be. I think I need to be maybe tougher. It's hard -- every day is a negotiation."

You said it, sister. Every day is a negotiation. And I think that's especially true for single mothers who can't always call for backup. Think of it this way: For those of us with more than one kid, we're always outnumbered. Of course I'm pretty sure Madonna's life as a single mom looks a lot different from mine; still, I understand the challenges of presenting a united front when you're a solo unit.

I'm also pretty sure Lourdes won't be lighting up again anytime soon, at least not in public, as her mother makes one thing very clear:

"Cigarette smoking I'm not very fond of -- for anyone."

Not very fond ... not very tough, but it's a step.
