Vanessa Minnillo Falls Into Rookie Pregnancy Traps

Vanessa Minnillo and Nick LacheyThough she's just barely showing right now, you can tell that Vanessa Minnillo is going to be one of those gorgeous, glowing pregnant women up until the minute she delivers. She and husband Nick Lachey are beyond excited for their firstborn's arrival, and you know they're going to make amazing parents. Like all eager parents-to-be, however, they've already fallen into a few rookie pregnancy traps.

First up, Minnillo actually admitted to taking a home gender prediction kit ... or at least to buying one. Yes, one of those crazy ones you buy at the drugstore for way too much money that are right ... oh, about 50 percent of the time. Along with a picture of one, she tweeted, "Am I crazy for wanting to try this? I'm such a sucker for this kind of stuff!"

Crazy? Well, only if she thinks there's any accuracy to be had from one. But her excitement to learn the sex is totally understandable, and plenty of women resort to such methods along with things like holding a needle over their belly, going to psychics, and other non-scientific methods. Some swear by them (the 50 percent for whom they were right), while the rest deem them a waste of money. For fun, they're one thing, but I certainly wouldn't start painting a nursery pink or blue based on one.

Her other rookie move? She said out loud, in a public forum (Twitter!), which sex she was hoping for. She tweeted: "I'm very excited either way, but I always wanted a boy first. Just a healthy baby."

I think we all have a preference for each pregnancy, no matter how much anyone denies it, but decreeing that you want one gender over the other is wrought with all sorts of problems. She did add the cursory "just a healthy baby," but still we all know now what she really wants. And so will her little girl someday if that's what she ends up having. Not that that's the worst fate a child can face, but it's definitely some fodder for sullen teenage brooding outbursts, "I know you don't love me, you always wanted a boy first!" That sort of thing.

She must have gotten some feedback from fans on this move too, as last night she addressed the issue again:

#ToBeClear @NickSLachey & I are praying for a healthy baby First & Foremost! I just always envisioned a boy 1st to take care of his siblings

But a baby girl would be just as much of a blessing... and she'd have @NickSLachey wrapped around her finger! Haha!

I wanted a boy first too, for the exact same reason ... which I can admit now that I had a son first. She also sounds like she's fine either way, and I'm sure that no matter what, she and Nick are going to love their baby beyond belief.

In any case, these rookie moves are spurred only by her excitement about being a mother. I'm excited for her, and as inaccurate as it may be, I'm kind of dying to see the results of that gender prediction test.

Did you take any home gender prediction tests? Did they "work" for  you? Did you voice your preference for a boy or girl before you learned the baby's sex?
