Mastectomy Will Make Giuliana Rancic an Even Better Mom

Giuliana RancicToday Giuliana Rancic made the shocking announcement that she will undergo a double mastectomy in her battle against breast cancer. It's sadly ironic that her life was saved because of her dreams of motherhood (the cancer was discovered during her IVF treatments), and now one of the most iconic symbols of motherhood -- her breasts -- will be removed before her dreams are realized. But they are just that -- symbols -- and her decision will only make her a better mother.

It's such a brave choice she's making both for her and her husband, Bill, but also for her future children who she said were a "big part" of her decision. While she could try to save her breasts with some pretty good odds (20-40 percent of it returning if she undergoes another lumpectomy along with radiation and medication), by undergoing the mastectomy, she reduces that rate down to less than 1 percent.

On the Today show today, she said, "It all came down to just choosing to live and not looking over my shoulder for the rest of my life." It may not be the right choice for everyone, but it's one that she has determined is best for her and her dreams of a family.

Through all of their infertility and now the cancer, she and Bill have remained positive and strong and committed to each other and to one day being parents. What amazing examples of love and determination they will be for their children.

As Giuliana said in the interview: "I'll be able to say that I survived something major and it's made me stronger. I will be a better woman for it."

Also, I think sometimes people who have a more difficult time achieving their dreams of parenthood appreciate their children just a little bit more. It's not that parents love children more because of struggles they encounter on their journey to parenthood, it's just that they may be a little more cognizant of the power of that love.

Bill and Giuliana have been through so very much, and it's not over yet. But you just know that when it is and they finally have that little boy or girl in the arms, they will never forget how badly they wanted him or her.

Do you think this experience will make Giuliana Rancic a better mother?
