Do You Want Jessica Simpson Dressing Your Tween?

Jessica Simpson & Eric JohnsonQuick, what's the first thing you think of when you think of Jessica Simpson? I'm guessing Daisy Dukes are up there for many. The super short denim shorts are exactly what I think of when I think of Jess, so when I think of her dressing tweens ... I'm not so sure.

Yet, that's exactly what she plans to do. She and sister Ashlee are launching a new tween line of clothing for girls as an extension of the Jessica Simpson Collection. According to WWD, it will launch this fall (just in time for school, of course), and will have a "girly, playful attitude."

It's not that Jess is the worst fashion role model out there (if it was Lady Gaga launching a tween line, then I'd be really worried), it's just that her taste in clothing has always teetered on too revealing and a bit tacky -- not a place I want  to see 9 and 10-year-old girls. I'm guessing her idea of what girly and playful are when we're talking about GIRLS (not women) and mine are quite different. Jessica told WWD:

I’m excited to bring my sister, Ashlee, along as co-creative director of this division, because she brings a savvy rocker edge that defines today’s tweens. My goal as co-creative director will be to design clothes that will help inspire young girls to express their personalities and creativity through fashion.

Really, do tweens need a "savvy rocker edge?" I was kind of hoping to keep my daughter in Lily Pulitzer-like gear until she was in high school. I'm not naive enough to think that will happen, but a mom can hope ... so forgive me for not being thrilled with Jessica Simpson coming in and trashing things up in the tween market. It's plenty trashy as it is. What happened to children looking like children instead of miniature adults?

I say this knowing I'm a huge hypocrite because I came out of the womb looking for the latest, hippest fashions, and fought many a battle with my own mother about what was or wasn't appropriate attire. It's just now with MY daughter, I'm starting to get scared by her fashion choices already-- and she's only 2! Given a whole closet of Hanna Andersson, the aforementioned Lily pieces snagged on sale, and smocked dresses, she'll dig into the depths to find the sparkly, purple sequined leotard with cut outs at the waist that a neighbor gave her. So I speak from a place of fear.

There's a chance that the Simpson sisters will keep things classy and age appropriate, and if that's the case, bring it on. Based on what I've seen so far, I have my doubts though.

What do you think of Jessica Simpson developing a line of clothing for tweens?
