Penelope Cruz Reminds Me of the Worst Jobs to Have While Pregnant

penelope cruz piratesOn May 20, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides hits theaters, one of the first summer blockbusters. Moviegoers will flock to see the action-adventure fluff, enjoy more of Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow-ness, and catch Penelope Cruz wield a sword ... while pregnant. Of course, her character in the movie wasn't pregnant, so the costume department was busy reconfiguring outfits, many of the fight scenes had to be re-worked, but she was always safe. The worst part she says: filming on location.

They left Johnny and I on a deserted island with no bathrooms to do a helicopter shot. That for a pregnant woman can be a little bit of a problem. So for those few hours I had to keep going into the water every 15 minutes.

This made me realize being an actress while pregnant would be kind of hard -- being so aware of your changing body, yet having to "get into" another character who isn't pregnant.

What other jobs are not so great to have while pregnant ... hmmm ...

Sure, jobs where you are put in harm's way pop into my mind, like police officer or fighter pilot or rodeo clown, but there are some other professions that would really not be fun to have when pregnant.

Waitress -- You are on your feet all day. As any pregnant lady knows, your tootsies get darn tired after just a few hours upright. Plus, as you start to show, you are going to have to answer question after question about how you are feeling, whether it's a boy or girl, what names you're thinking of ... though looking on the bright side, you may get better tips and do have a built-in tray.

Fashion designer -- Think about it. You're around all of those skinny models, you can't wear what you're making, you need to be sure you look good and fashionable ... which can be rather difficult when you feel like a hippo.

Flight attendant -- When you're pregnant and working, the one thing you look forward to at the end of the day is collapsing on your own bed. Flight attendants may be in hotels, far from the comforts of home. The usual travel issues we all have -- imagine doing that almost every day while pregnant. Do I even have to mention maneuvering the small aisles and tiny bathrooms with a growing belly? Not fun.

Preschool teacher -- Being a preschool teacher will make naming your baby almost impossible. Too many cases where names have specific connotations associated with them: William ate his boogers, Avery was a brat, and so on. Not only that, you are front and center in your future life. You see what your kiddo will be like in three years. Sometimes not knowing is better, which leads me to the last one.

OB-GYN -- Seriously, this is a case of information overload. Good that you know what is going on, bad that you know EVERYTHING that can/could/might happen. Knowledge -- in this case -- is not power, it can maddening for a mama-to-be.
