Lily Allen Suffers Second Miscarriage

Lindsay LohanIn her sixth month of pregnancy, Lily Allen, 25, has suffered a miscarriage. It's her second miscarriage in about two years, and hearts everywhere are breaking for her.

"It is with great sadness that we have to confirm that Lily Allen and Sam Cooper have lost their baby," her rep told People in a statement. "The couple ask that their privacy be respected and that they be left alone at this deeply distressing time. No further comment will be made."

Just over a month ago, I wrote that she was "the happiest pregnant person on earth." After the first fear-filled months, she had embraced pregnancy and was making plans for raising her little boy.

To see all that taken away from her so far along in the game is devastating.

Allen was supposed to perform at an AIDS fundraiser for Elton John a few days ago, but had to cancel due to what she said was a viral illness. Whether that had any role in the miscarriage is unknown at this point.

And the unknown is one of the most difficult aspects of miscarriage -- not knowing or being able to pinpoint what caused it, not knowing if it will continue to affect future pregnancies, and, most regrettably, not ever getting to know your child.

Few miscarriages happen this late in pregnancy. And while there's nothing easy when it comes to such a loss, it certainly has to be more difficult to encounter once you felt you were out of the danger zone and finally nearing that day when you hold your baby in your arms.

All the hopes, dreams, and speculation as to what he would look like, who he would be, gone ... just like that.

If she had reached her 24th week of pregnancy, it may actually be considered a stillbirth. The terminology doesn't change the tragedy, but it may more accurately reflect the feelings of loss.

Hopefully, Allen will be able to find comfort in the warm wishes, prayers, and good thoughts fans everywhere are sending her way, instead of feeling the burden of the public spotlight in such a trying time.

Best wishes to her and her family.
