Why Mariah Carey Hid Pregnancy

mariah careyMariah Carey is pregnant. I know, I know, tell you something you didn't know, right?

The pop singer and husband Nick Cannon finally confirmed what the entire world has known since June, with Mimi telling Access Hollywood, "We are pregnant, this is true!"

We'll forgive her for the "we" for the moment because there's a bigger hurdle to cross. Why the heck did Mariah hide this for so long? It seems the diva known for only allowing photogs to get her good side and preferring to be fed like a toddler by her assistant could just be acting like a normal pregnant woman this time.

There are plenty of reasons to pretend you're not pregnant, and Mimi's racked up three of them in one fell swoop:

1. She's superstitious. The second you get pregnant, people start throwing old wives' tales and superstitions at you. From rumors about how the shape of your stomach will determine the sex of your baby to ideas about time of conception, it's hard not to buy into some of them. Just consulting one of those Chinese gender charts means you've drank some of the Kool-Aid. And Carey couldn't be any more clear about this. She announced in August, "I appreciate everyone's well wishes. But I am very superstitious."

2. She had a miscarriage. The American Pregnancy Association estimates 10-25 percent of all clinically recognized pregnancies will end in miscarriage, usually during the first 13 weeks of pregnancy. The risk increases with age -- and Mariah is 41. So is it any wonder she would be wary of the risk? Especially when this news came to light: she had one herself two years ago.

3. She wanted privacy. Who wants to live under public scrutiny? If you think it's bad having everyone in your neighborhood discussing your sex life, imagine the whole world. Carey said, "It's been tough because I've been trying to hold on to a shred of privacy."

So why now? This is where Carey deviates from the rest of us. She has a new album to promote -- a Christmas CD -- and she's not due until the spring. Which means she'd have to hide a growing belly while making the media rounds.

Well, it was nice having her among us normal folk for awhile. Good luck Mariah, we'll be keeping our ears open for that "One Sweet Day."
