For some reason, plaid just makes us think of fashion across the pond. But why is that? Generally, "plaid" isn't even the right name for the pattern members of the royal family often wear. The specific patterns the royals wear is usually "tartan," and it has Scottish roots (which is why traditional Scottish kilts always look like that!). Each specific tartan is connected to an ancient Scottish family. But like everything else in the world, though, plaid was thrown into the big salad bowl that we call the fashion industry, and now, plaid is everywhere -- scarves, hats, shirts, and even shoes!

But what about dresses? It seems that one person in particular has cornered the market on plaid dresses (and, well, plaid everything.) Her name, of course, is Kate Middleton.

Let's point out the obvious: the royal family loves plaid. Specifically speaking, though, Kate has the most diverse looks of them all. We already know that she can rock a suit-skirt, a blazer, a maxi dress, and ... basically, everything. But when all those different colors and patterns are thrown into the mix, it's a whole other ball game. Kate could make any plaid color-combo look great. Pink and orange? Green and blue? Name it -- she rocks it.

Plaid just seems to be Kate's thing -- and every royal seems to have a "thing." Queen Elizabeth has those amazing, color-coordinated outfits for every occasion, and Meghan Markle is leading the pack when it comes to modern looks. If there's one thing we're sure about, though, it's the fact that Prince William is one lucky guy to have such a fashionable partner-in-crime. Whether she's casual or formal, here are some memorable "checkered" fashion moments by the duchess herself!
