Celebrities in the public eye make plenty of mistakes for all to see, but somehow, when it comes to bad tattoos, they seem even worse. Why? Maybe because there are few things more cringe-y than bad ink that's on skin permanently -- whether it's a wedding tattoo that outlasted the marriage, Japanese script that doesn't mean what the tattoo artist said it meant, or a hilariously bad misspelling. And maybe because so many celeb explanations of why they got terrible tattoos come with embarrassing stories. Stories about hitting the tattoo shop after three too many margaritas on the tour bus, or admissions that they fell for the "tramp stamp" trend and now can't crouch down in jeans without checking to make sure the paps are not around to capture it for posterity (and laughs).

Of course, there are lots of reasons why stars get tattoos -- like to commemorate the birth of their kids, or honor the life of a parent -- and often, the results are beautiful. But when someone's reminded of an ex every time he steps out of the shower, it's not so great. Recently, more stars have opted to have questionable tattoos covered, or get them lasered off, which is not for the faint of heart. Plenty of celebs have shared the painful process on Snapchat or Instagram stories as proof, along with advice to skip tattoos unless it's sure to be something that will still feel right in 10 years.

For those who are not brave enough, there are always long sleeves and concealer, or they can just own the mistake they made when they were young, or in Vegas with their best friend and move on. But before we let them change the subject, here are 15 celebrities who opened up about their tattoo regrets

Clearly, they never heard of the motto "think before ya ink."

  • Jessie J

She knows that social media can be brutal, so rather than wait for trolls to @her for having a bad tattoo, Jessie J called herself out. In a funny Instagram post that included a picture of her in a bikini, Channing Tatum's better half admitted to misspelling a word in the tattoo on her right hip, which reads: "Don't loose who you are in the blur of the stars" -- lyrics from one of her own songs. The tattoo is the reason she wears everything high-waisted, she says, adding, "I still don’t know the difference between lose and loose."

  • Sarah Hyland

Modern Family star Sarah Hyland and her best friend got matching dinosaur tattoos on their butts and flashed them in 2017, along with the caption, "We believe in dinosaurs." Did Sarah, who has several, um, subtler, tattoos, suddenly stop believing? She recently posted an Instagram story documenting painful tattoo removal. Though she didn't mention which tattoo was a goner, judging from the positioning in the video, everyone's thinking it's the prehistoric beast that got lasered.

  • Nicole Richie

Nicole Richie has been pretty critical of her younger self and her habit of making bad tattoo decisions. Let's see, there was the neck tattoo of her last name decorated with a bow, which she says she was a "a 19-year-old idiot" for getting. And then there was the cross just above her butt, which she looked into getting removed, then changed her mind when told the process would be painful.

Guess some regrets are worth living with.

  • Amy Schumer

Here's another celeb owning a not-so-great tat that she's stuck with: Amy Schumer, who wrote an entire memoir called The Girl With The Lower Back Tattoo. The funny lady, whose comedy is based on her being a self-described "[expletive]," posted a picture of herself showing off a huge tribal-type design, and tagged it #iknowmytattoosucks.

  • Adam Levine

It's not surprising that someone with tons of tattoos has at least one that didn't quite turn out as planned. For Adam Levine, it's the one on his right shoulder, as he told Anderson Cooper. He called it a "horrible, bastardized version" of a Russian prison tattoo -- which, to be honest, already sounds like a terrible idea. But then, he tried to fix it with more embellishment, but made it worse, and now, it looks like "a cauliflower with a sun in the middle of it." Good thing he's still got that face and that bod to distract us.

  • Demi Lovato

The former Disney star was 18 when she got an especially unfortunate tattoo of a friend's lips tattooed on a forearm. When Demi, who has been frank about her struggles, sobered up and looked at it, it reminded her of a certain lady part. Naturally, it had to go. She had it covered up with a rose, which is much prettier, and much less awkward.

  • Kelly Osbourne

It's very, very rock 'n roll to get 15 tattoos. It comes with the territory when a celeb is born into heavy metal royalty, like Kelly Osbourne was. But it might be even more hardcore to choose to have nearly all of them removed, like Kelly did. Either she has a high pain threshold, or ahem, meds. Either way, it seems to have done her good, since she says she got the tattoos as self-harm during difficult teen years.

  • Megan Fox

It always seemed to us like Megan Fox's Marilyn Monroe tattoo was always competing with her for attention. It was that prominent on her right forearm. Megan herself said she was getting rid of it because she did not want to attract the kind of negative energy that tormented the legendary star. She eventually had it lasered off, which took an entire year.

  • Hayden Panettiere

Oops! Misspellings are so common in tattoos that one would think people would download dictionary apps to check against before getting ink. Hayden Panettiere clearly did not. Her tattoo was supposed to say, "Live without regrets" in Italian, but the word for regrets was misspelled rimipianti instead of the correct rimpianti

    Oh, the irony!

"So I literally have to live by that advice," she once said, but then decided to get a fresh start and had the tattoo lasered off.

  • Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber still has a prominent tattoo of ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez -- wearing  wings, no less-- above his left wrist. In a GQ video about his tattoos, he talked about his (at least it seemed to us) half-hearted attempt to alter the ink. "I tried kinda covering her face up with some shading, but people still know." Wonder how wife Hailey Bieber, whom he married this year, feels about that.

  • Blake Shelton

By Blake Shelton's own admission, his left forearm tattoo is a deer-hunting reference but "doesn't mean crap." As he colorfully told Oprah once, "I'm a country guy from Oklahoma and I thought, 'I'll get some deer tracks going around my arm, and a band of them.'"

Alas, the deer tracks ended up looking like "Sugar Smacks or coffee beans," probably because neither he nor the tattoo artist was sober, he said, so he added barbed wire as a distraction.

  • Jessica Alba

There are tattoos that Jessica Alba is glad she got, like the ones in honor of her husband and kids, and others that she despises. And one of them is a cluster of blue flowers in the back of her neck, which has become a thorn in her side. "I got it when I was, like, 17 and I'm so irritated that I got it," once revealed. "I got it lasered many times and it's not coming out."
  • Kaley Cuoco

She thought it would last forever, but Kaley Cuoco's marriage to tennis pro Ryan Sweeting actually lasted less than two years. So, that tattoo on her back commemorating their wedding date in Roman numerals? Outdated. The Big Bang Theory star covered it with an enormous moth, which we really hope she won't regret, too.

    It's really big.

  • Eva Longoria

When former Desperate Housewives Eva Longoria star found out that then-husband and basketball star Tony Parker had been inappropriately texting a teammate's wife, the marriage was over. It was then time to remove the tattoo evidence: their wedding date on her right wrist, and the word 'nine' (in honor of his basketball jersey number) off the back of her neck. Judging from her Snapchat of another removal, it couldn't have been easy, or pain-free.

  • Khloe Kardashian

The Kardashian sis's marriage to Lamar Odom also crashed and burned, but at least her tattoo commemorating their union was tiny -- just his initials in delicate cursive, on her hand -- and easy to get rid of. It's nowhere to be seen in recent pictures.
