Did Prince William & Kate Middleton Just Take a Swipe at Prince Harry & Meghan Markle?

Mere days after Prince William and Kate Middleton joined forces with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for a mental health PSA, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge officially erased their counterparts from their website. This week, William and Kate revamped their charity website -- Royal Foundation -- to remove the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as principals.

Given the fact that the couples parted ways in August, it was inevitable that this was going to happen. But still. It's a little awkward.

  • The Royal Foundation was started in 2009 by both Prince William and Prince Harry, but now, only William is credited with founding it on the site.

There are a few mentions of Harry and Meghan on the site under the "news" section, but most of their charitable works -- including the Invictus Games and Meghan's community cookbook -- have been deleted.

According to the "our work" section, the programs the Royal Foundation now supports are mental health, conservation, service, young people, and early years.

  • Over the summer, a message was posted to the Royal Foundation site, explaining the restructuring of things.

"It was announced that The Royal Foundation will become the principal charitable and philanthropic vehicle for The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge," the message read. "The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will establish their own new charitable foundation with transitional operating support from The Royal Foundation. In addition both couples will continue to work together on projects in the future, including on The Foundation’s mental health program, Heads Together. Work on this is still ongoing."

  • Around the same time, palace officials revealed that Harry and Meghan would be starting their own foundation -- Sussex Royal.

A statement from the palace read:

"Both couples will continue to work together on projects in the future, including on The Foundation’s mental health program, Heads Together. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are incredibly proud of what they have achieved together through The Royal Foundation. They are especially proud to have established a charity that has had, and will continue to have, significant long-lasting impact, changing lives for the better."

Although the separation surprised many, a royal source previously told People that the restructuring was a nothing more than a “natural progression.”

  • Even though people love to talk about there being a "rift" between the Cambridges and Sussexes, it sounds like the charity separation was always in the cards.

"A review of The Royal Foundation is something that had previously been announced,” a source told People. “This is part of [the couples’] diverging paths, which hastened a look at the foundation.”

Another insider added that breaking off into two foundations was essentially necessary because “the Duke of Cambridge has less flexibility [in his charity work] because of his constitutional obligations.”

In other words: Don't read into things too much. And the silver lining? With two charity foundations, the Cambridges and Sussexes will be able to cover more ground.

Sounds like a win to us.
