Prince Harry's Days as a Royal May Very Well Be Numbered

It's no secret that Prince Harry has a love-hate relationship with his fame and role in the British royal family. The Duke of Sussex obviously wants to do good in the world, but also -- as demonstrated through several scuffles with photographers in his youth -- doesn't want to be a celebrity. Before getting together with Meghan Markle, it seemed like Prince Harry could go either way when it came to being a working royal, but that quickly disappeared when the pair hit the ground running with their charity work.

Now, though? It's being reported that, despite being one of the most popular royals, Prince Harry could take or leave life in the royal family.

  • After the backlash Harry and Meghan received for using a private jet, a royal expert revealed that Harry may want to take a step back from his life in London.

According to The Express, royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams said that Harry and Meghan may start spending more time abroad.

"There is vast global interest in them," Fitzwilliams said. "This leads inevitably to the reports that they might spend an extended time abroad, possibly in their roles with the queen's Commonwealth Trust or even in the USA."

Hmm ... we've heard rumblings of this in the past. Could it be true? If you believe the whole "where there's smoke, there's fire" theory, it certainly may be the case.

  • Additionally, there was a time when Harry spoke with biographer Angela Levine about his relationship with his position in life.

Speaking with Levine, Harry said he “didn’t really want” his position as sixth in line to the British throne.

"If you’re born into [the royal family], as we were, I think it’s normal to feel as though you don’t really want it. They [those who have sought fame] have a natural talent. We don’t," Harry said. “We don’t want to be just a bunch of celebrities but instead use our role for good. It’s a narrow line between the two, but I am not going to cross it and go down the celebrity route."

Kind of ironic that he would up marrying a celebrity, no?

  • Ironically, though, particularly since marrying Meghan Markle, Prince Harry has emerged as one of the most likable and relatable royals.

And apparently, both he and Meghan know it.

In addition to setting a record for being the fastest Instagram account to gain 1 million followers, the pair have also hired a top social media strategist to help them with their "brand," if you will.

Doesn't really sound like someone who's going to leave the royal family any time soon.

  • Whether Harry wants to leave the royal family or not, the reality is, he's kind of stuck with his position, no matter what.

Royal expert Daniela Elser said: “The reality is, for most members of the royal family, it is a quirk of fate that makes them a member of a household ... Therefore, the ambivalence they might feel towards their lot in life is kinda understandable."

Elser added: “They have each agreed to trade their anonymity and independence for the chance to join an archaic, sometimes apathetic institution and drag it towards modernity and relevance, one Instagram post at a time. So for Harry and co, while it might be 'normal to feel as though you don’t really want it,' they are sadly stuck with it."

Although "stuck" may be a weird word to use, it's impossible to deny that being a royal comes with its pitfalls.

That said, if it's any consolation, Harry, we hope you don't ever up and leave.
