There are a lot of celebrity look-alikes out there, but what happens when one star gets mistaken for another? Apparently, this happens in Hollywood more often than one might think. Because of similar faces and hair color, there are actually a lot of celebs who've been mistaken for other celebs ... and it's led to a lot of awkward moments over the years -- with some even being caught on camera. People are only human, but we can't help but cringe to find out that so many celebrities have had to deal with these sometimes embarrassing moments.

For some of these celebs, it totally makes sense. Amy Adams and Isla Fisher both look crazy alike, and so do Leighton Meester and Minka Kelly. But others have us scratching our heads ... like how could anyone ever think that Zac Efron was someone else?

It's truly mind-blowing how these things can happen.

Sometimes, it's excited fans who are to blame for the mistaken identity; and sometimes, it's other stars who think they're talking to a different celebrity than the one they've just met. But no matter how it happens, we can't help but feel like it has to be the most awkward thing ever to be someone put in this position. (Should they correct people, or should they just play along? It seems like there's no right answer.)

Here are stars who get mistaken for other celebrities and their tales about how it happened. We have to laugh at some of these stories, but some of them are totally giving us secondhand embarrassment.

  • Zooey Deschanel & Katy Perry

In a 2009 interview with MTV, Zooey admitted that she's frequently mistaken for Katy, and at the time, she wasn't a fan of it. In fact, she said it was a "little bit annoying," mostly because other than their looks, they were so different.

"I used to get, 'I heard you were out at such-and-such club drinking whiskey!' I was at home watching TV," Zooey told the site at the time. "I think we lead very different lives. At some point I feel like this will stop being a thing. I like the way my life goes. It's sort of strange to be associated with someone that's doing such different stuff than me. It's weird."

  • Daniel Radcliffe & Elijah Wood

When Elijah was on Conan in 2016, he said that people frequently think he's Daniel, the star most known for Harry Potter ... and the more famous each of them became, the worse it got.

"People started to mistake me for Daniel, and apparently, they'd mistake him for me," Elijah said. "After a while you'd think it hits the Internet and people talk about it for awhile, and you think, 'OK, we get it, the joke is over and it'll die,' but it has long legs. It keeps going."

  • Rupert Grint & Ed Sheeran

Rupert is an actor, and Ed is a singer, but that hasn't stopped this case of mistaken identity. While on The Late Late Show in 2017, Rupert admitted that people think he's Ed all the time.

"When someone stops me, it could go either way. I could be Ed or I could be me," he said. "The singer Leo Sayer came up to me and said he loved my music, of course thinking I was Ed. I just played along."

  • Darren Criss & Kit Harington

In 2016, Darren shared a photo on Instagram with someone who thought he was Kit, just so he could remember the time that it happened. He wrote:

    "Hey... Are you Kit Harington?"
Me: aw sorry man I'm not
"Aw cuz if you were I'd kick myself if I didn't ask for a picture."
    [he goes, disappointed]
Me: wait, can I get a picture though? To commemorate this moment?"
If only we could've been there to witness this happening. At least Darren kept a good sense of humor about the whole thing!

  • Mark Wahlberg & Matt Damon

In 2013, Mark shared a screen shot of a text conversation between someone who thought they met Matt Damon but actually met him. The excited fan even took a photo with Mark and screamed "Matt Damon!" when she saw him.

And to Mark's credit, he just played along.

  • John Stamos & Rob Lowe

While John Stamos was on vacation, he shared a video on Instagram of a fan who thought he was Rob and wanted a photo with him. In the video, John says, "What's my name?" and the fan says, "Rob." And he says, "Rob what?" The fan goes, "Rob Lowe."

John told her that she's right and went on to take the photo -- a funny yet awkward moment, but at least he was a good sport about it.

  • Sarah Hyland & Mila Kunis

A Teen Vogue article once labeled a photo of Mila Kunis as Sarah Hyland. And apparently, it wasn't the first time they've been mistaken. Back in 2010, they had an agreement that if either of them is mistaken for the other, they'll just play along.

We wonder if this game is still happening?

  • Daisy Ridley & Keira Knightley

In an interview with The Daily Mail in 2015 -- before Daisy's role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens made her a household name -- the actress admitted that people think Daisy Ridley looks a lot like Keira Knightley. And to her, it gets pretty frustrating at times, no offense to Keira.

"People have always said that I look like Keira Knightley. But it is actually really frustrating," she said. "Keira Knightley is wonderful and has her own thing. I just think to compare a 23-year-old girl to anyone else is so unnecessary. I just think every single person in the world has their own thing going on. And I just want to be me."

  • Chris Pratt & Chris Evans

On an episode of Billy on the Street, a fan thought Chris Pratt was Chris Evans, and we get it. After all, there are a lot of Chrises who star in the Avengers franchise alone (Chris Pratt, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth.

TBH, we'd be happy to meet either of these guys -- or any guy named Chris in Hollywood for that matter.

  • Amy Adams & Isla Fisher

When Isla was on Jimmy Kimmel Live in 2017, she said that Lady Gaga once thought she was Amy when they crossed paths at an Oscars after party. The singer approached her to congratulate her on her performance in American Hustle, and Isla just played along because after all, it's Lady Gaga. She said:

"I just gracefully thanked her, bowed my head, OK? And then she wants to talk about the performance, and now I’m thinking, 'I don’t want to be a liar'… And then I look over her shoulder and there’s Amy Adams walking into the party. So I’m like, ‘There’s Isla Fisher.’ I said, ‘She’s not even nominated for anything. What’s she doing here?’"
  • Minka Kelly & Leighton Meester

For Leighton and Minka, the fact that they look so alike actually led them to star in the same movie together, The Roommate, about a college student who gets a little too obsessed with her roommate. Minka said that doing the movie together was a "no brainer" in an interview with CBS News.

    We have to agree.

  • Lucy Hale & Selena Gomez

One of them starred in Pretty Little Liars, and the other is better known for her music these days. But that didn't stop one fan from thinking that Lucy was Selena

"Someone was seriously convinced I was Selena Gomez today and tried to take my phone because they wanted to call Justin Bieber," Lucy tweeted in 2011. "Ohh life."

We're going to need the full story on this one. What happened next?!

  • Ed Sheeran & Prince Harry

People don't just think that Rupert Grint is Ed Sheeran, but they also think that Prince Harry is Ed, too. Margot Robbie explained on an episode of The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon that the first time she met Prince Harry, she thought he was Ed.

"I didn't know it was a prince, it’s not like he was wearing a crown," she admitted. "When I saw him in those glasses, I was like, 'Oh, my God, I didn't know Ed Sheeran was at the party!' He got really offended. He was like, 'Shut up!'"

  • Elizabeth Banks & Chelsea Handler

They're both blond, they're both funny, and they're actually different people. However, as Elizabeth told Fox News in 2012, people sometimes get them mixed up.

And according to her, that's not a bad thing.

"I don't mind being compared to Chelsea Handler at all," she said. "It helps me when someone says, 'oh, you're Chelsea Handler' and I say 'yes I am.' That gives me one more gain of anonymity. We met at a party and we were both aware people compared or confused us. She's a great broad, a real wit."

  • Kim Kardashian & Eva Longoria

    This one is pretty embarrassing.

As E! News pointed out back in 2013, Bret Michaels tweeted to wish Eva a happy birthday, but the photo he shared was of him and Kim. (Whoops!) He deleted the tweet and posted a new one, just for Eva.

Hey, being compared to Kim Kardashian in the looks department doesn't sound like a bad thing ... right?

  • Theo James & James Franco

This time, the paparazzi are at fault. Theo James told Hollywood.com that he was followed by a photographer once solely for the fact that they thought he was James Franco

... and it led to a pretty awkward moment.

"It was fun to be human and to wave and be like, 'What's up, man?' but he was like 'Where are you going?' And I said, 'Um, we're going for some food, why are you filming me?'" Theo said. "And he stopped and you could see he was like 'Oh sh-t.' He thought I was f*cking James Franco. Maybe it's because I changed my haircut and started doing press-ups."

  • Zac Efron & Kevin Zegers

    Splash News; Splash News

It's hard to imagine Zac being mistaken for anyone else, but apparently, it happens to him and Kevin Zegers. In fact, in Feburary, Kevin posted a photo on Instagram of their faces morphed together, calling it "unsettling."

"This is both complimentary and completely unsettling," he wrote. "@Zacefron, I think it's time we bust out the Siamese Twins screenplay we’ve been working on."

  • Chris Rock & Kevin Hart

Much like John Stamos, Kevin Hart also shared a video on Instagram of a fan who thought he was someone else: Chris Rock. In the video, he asks the fan who he is, and she replies, "Chris Rock." Of course, he tells her she's correct -- and then tells her she needs to make it to his show that night.

  • Brittany Murphy & Lili Reinhart

This one involves a spooky conspiracy theory. According to what Lili told BuzzFeed, some people think she's Brittany reincarnated.

"Everyone says Brittany Murphy -- everyone," the Riverdale star said. "They think I'm her reincarnated. There are a lot of pictures of us side by side where we look crazy alike. If you just google Lili Reinhart and Brittany Murphy, you'll see it."

  • Henry Cavill & Matt Bomer

As Matt Bomer confirmed on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, he was originally set to play Superman in Man of Steel, but it ultimately went to Henry. They look so alike that it makes sense that they'd both be up for the same role. Plus, it doesn't sound like Matt holds any hard feelings toward Henry for getting the role.
