To the world, Prince William and Kate Middleton appear to be the perfect couple. They met in college, had a fairy tale wedding followed by three beautiful children, and, you know, travel the world and live in a palace. By many people's standards, they're the embodiment of #goals. Now, though, a scandal claiming Prince William had an affair with one of Kate's good friends is rocking the Cambridges to the core.

Say it ain't so, Wills.

  • Out of seemingly nowhere, a report has surfaced, claiming that a falling out has occurred between Kate and her longtime friend Rose Hanbury.

And the reason? William reportedly had an affair with her.

Numerous outlets are claiming that Hanbury, who is married to British aristocrat David Rocksavage, the seventh Marquess of Cholmondeley, hooked up with Prince William while he was married to Kate. The first to report the rumor was the Sun last month, saying that Kate now views Hanbury as a "rural rival" and she wants her "phased out" of their close-knit circle. Prince William, meanwhile, has reportedly been trying to "broker peace" between the women.

  • Supposed royal sources claim that the feud between Kate and Hanbury is "well-known" and the women have had a "terrible falling out."

"They used to be close but that is not the case any more," an insider told the Sun. "William wants to play peacemaker so the two couples can remain friends, given they live so close to each other and share many mutual friends. But Kate has been clear that she doesn't want to see them any more and wants William to phase them out, despite their social status."

  • According to the Daily Mail correspondent Richard Kay, some of the gossip has gotten so bad that both parties are considering taking legal action.

Not long after Twitter began talking about the alleged affair, Times food writer Giles Coren wrote, "Yes. it is an affair. i haven't read thee piece but i know about the affair. everyone knows about the affair, darling. even us jews. (although admittedly i'm quite a posh jew -- if such a thing exists."

Coren then quickly deleted the tweet.

Kay, meanwhile, said that the rumor was "false" and spread simply to "damage Kate."

"These hurtful rumors of a fall-out are simply false," Kay wrote. "William and David were in touch with each other over the weekend, not knowing whether to laugh or complain. Both wives are hurt by the suggestion that there is any argument or even a coolness between them. They have plans for future events involving their charity."

  • There's no way we'll ever really find out if William did, in fact, cheat on Kate.

Of course, we're hoping he didn't, but hey, who knows what the royal family does behind closed doors.

Meanwhile, somewhere Meghan Markle is sighing a breath of relief that, for once, the gossip isn't about her.
