Chip Gaines Opens Up About 'Fixer Upper' & Why It Made Him Feel 'Trapped' Toward the End

Joanna Gaines and Chip Gaines

Talk about an interesting reveal! As much as fans loved the HGTV hit show Fixer Upper, it appears the beloved reality series was quite taxing on a certain couple we can't help but adore. Chip Gaines admitting Fixer Upper made him feel "trapped" toward the end is unexpected (well, the brutal honesty), but very understandable.

  • Chip is opening up in the January 2019 issue of Cowboys & Indians magazine about Fixer Upper and why it became too much.

  • "TV was a funny thing for me. I'm an authentic, sincere person," the dad of five reveals.

"So, as long as things are natural and organic, I'm in my element," Chip Gaines tells the magazine about life filming Fixer Upper, People reports. "But the more staged something becomes, or the more required something becomes, it boxes me up."

  • "I felt like toward the end of the Fixer Upper journey, I felt caged, trapped."

"Jo and I couldn't figure it out. I mean, why? You're getting to have all this fun, right? But it's like if I put a camera in your face and said, 'Hey, say something funny.' Or if I put a camera in your face and said, 'Hey, be smart.' I just struggled with that environment. Especially at the end of it."

  • Fixer Upper aired for five seasons, blessing us with all things shiplap from 2013 to 2018.

Back in September 2017, Chip and Joanna revealed they were ending the show to pursue other projects and ventures.

"It is with both sadness and expectation that we share the news that season 5 of Fixer Upper will be our last," the couple wrote in a blog post about ending the beloved series. "While we are confident that this is the right choice for us, it has for sure not been an easy one to come to terms with. Our family has grown up alongside yours, and we have felt you rooting us on from the other side of the screen. How bittersweet to say goodbye to the very thing that introduced us all in the first place."

  • Though it's come to and end, our favorite home duo are coming back to television with their own *network.*

"We are coming back to television," Chip revealed during an appearance on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon about him and Joanna returning to TV. "We've learned a lot through the five-year process of being on Fixer Upper, and I think some of the things that really caused us the most problems, we have concluded -- I think we can figure this out. We've actually partnered with David Zaslav and Discovery, and we're actually going to have a network. And I think we're really going to carve it out in a way that really makes sense to us and our family."

  • And we can't wait to see what's next.

We can't wait to see what's in store for Joanna and Chip Gaines! May your Magnolia empire continue to grow.
