The holidays are here and the royals are beginning to host their various celebrations. Today at Kensington Palace in the Orangery, just a short walk from their home, Prince William and Kate Middleton hosted military families in partnership with the Royal British Legion charity. Kate's outfit couldn't have been more perfect for the occasion -- she choose a red tartan -- because she also matched with the guest of honor: Santa.

  • One can never go wrong with a long A-line tartan skirt.

Kate's tartan skirt is by designer Emilia Wickstead and her top is a Brora cropped cashmere black cardigan. Black boots completed her look. We'd be remiss not to mention her locks, which were full of bounce. Kate's hair is always on point. William looked quite dashing as well.

  • And because the royals are magic, they made it snow.

When taking the short walk from their home to the Orangery, Kate and Will were met with a burst of fake snow. We also noticed how great the skirt looks in motion.

  • Kate's speech was really lovely and heartfelt.

Kate spoke to the families and recalled her feelings from when Prince William was serving in the Royal Air Force. "As someone whose husband has served, I know how hard it feels when a loved one leaves to do the job they trained for. When William served in the Falklands or went search and rescue, I remember how it felt. But I can’t imagine how it feels when your loved ones are away on active service during Christmas. The absence of people you love must be especially hard at this time of year or at those special family moments.”

She went on to let all the military family members know how valued they are and how thankful she is for their service.

  • There were a lot of festive activities and Santa didn't disappoint.

Crafting and toys for the kids were available there (though no sight of George, Charlotte, and Louis). The royal family made sure to put the focus on these families and brought a bit of holiday cheer into their day.

Kate's choice of red tartan fit in perfectly without being too over the top. That's so Kate -- her winter looks have always been inspiring.

Both Kate and Will leave Wednesday for Cyprus to visit the Air Force base and deliver cards and gifts from their loved ones to those serving. Such a beautiful gesture ... and we can't wait to see what Kate will wear.
