No matter how much it is wished to be so, it appears that Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle are not best friends. People magazine has some inside scoop on what's going on between the two princesses and inside Kensington Palace. Most notably is some gossip on what it was like between Meghan and Kate last Christmas, along with some insight on what may be happening this holiday season now that things have changed up a bit.

  • Meghan and Kate "got on" just fine for the holidays last year, but so much has happened since then.

Last year began the whirlwind of merging Meghan into the family. Some sources have said that it was Prince William who thought things were moving way too fast and even had a tiff with Prince Harry about it. (Prince Charles had to mediate.) According to People magazine regarding the holidays last year, a source claimed that the royals "really loved Christmas and all had a wonderful time." The source continued that the "two women got on" but that they were "definitely not best friends, but it was a really special time for them all to spend together.”

  • It's clear that Meghan is doing her best to fit in as a royal, but she still has to be herself -- something Harry has never shied away from either.

There shouldn't be too much pressure for Meghan and Kate to be best friends. If they are, then great. If not, so what? How many sister-in-laws get along like they love each other endlessly and want to spend every minute with each other? Exactly.

And so, perhaps proving how alike Meghan and Harry are, these two kind of do their own thing ... and their own thing means not having to be attached at the hip (and house) with Kate and Will.

    About that house situation ....

  • All the drama about Meghan and Harry moving out of Kensington Palace and into Frogmore House isn't that big of a deal.

When looking at who Meg and Harry are as individuals, it makes complete sense that they'd want their own place to call home -- even if Kensington Palace can probably fit 10 families who never run into each other. Apparently Apartment 1 reportedly has 20 rooms! So, the newlyweds and expectant parents are moving to Frogmore ... which is a five-minute walk from Windsor Castle and about 20 miles from Kensington Palace grounds.

It's not as if the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are moving far, far away from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. That bit of distance sounds perfect. One insider said, “Harry will want to establish himself and come out of the shadows and not be in his brother’s shadows. They want to do their own thing and create their own style. And to do that you need to be away sometimes.”

  • Based on last Christmas, this holiday season will probably be a lot different.

There is no doubt that the ladies will "get on" just fine this year, too. So much has happened since then. Harry and Meg are married, and there's a baby on the way, which means there will be much talk about how Meghan's feeling and the couple's nesting plans. And there is a new little one who will be enjoying his very first Christmas -- Prince Louis! Prince George will be causing mischief and unwrapping gifts before it's time, and Princess Charlotte will probably be his lookout.

Bottom line: Meghan and Kate do not need to be best friends. They just need to be, well, family.
