Absence makes the heart grown fonder? On September 24, Prince William is embarking on a tour of Africa to further his work as a champion of wildlife preservation. As for Kate Middleton, though? She's sitting this one out.

  • Since giving birth to Prince Louis in April, Kate has been on maternity leave, save for a few random appearances.

It's been reported numerous times that, come fall, the Duchess of Cambridge will be resuming her royal duties.

So, why isn't she going with William to Africa? Simply put, it has nothing to do with her.

While Prince William and Kate Middleton frequently travel together and support the same charities, wildlife preservation is more William's thing, as he is president of the United For Wildlife and Tusk Trust charities, both of which protect endangered species in Africa.

According to the Express, the duke and duchess prefer to keep certain charities and tours separate, and while mental health is an issue that's near and dear to Kate's heart, wildlife and nature preservation have been among William's patronages for years.

  • William's trip will involve several meetings and engagements to fight against the illegal trade of wildlife.

OK! Magazine’s royal expert Christina Reeves recently revealed that William's Africa trip is a "personal project" that involves an issue close to his heart.

"Typically William has always worked solo in his fight against illegal wildlife trade, which is why we wouldn’t see Kate join him on a trip like this or him joining Kate on her own personal projects, such as promoting the importance of perinatal, maternal, and children's mental health," Reeves said.

  • During his trip, William will visit the African nations of Namibia, Tanzania, and Kenya.

On Thursday, Kensington Palace tweeted on Thursday: “The Duke of Cambridge will visit Namibia, Tanzania and Kenya from Monday 24th to Sunday 30th September. The private working trip is being made as @United4Wildlife President and @Tusk_org Patron ahead of the 2018 Illegal Wildlife Trade Conference in London #EndWildlifeCrime."

While William's away, Kate Middleton will likely be soaking up the final days of her maternity leave with her children before it's back to work.

And hopefully -- hopefully! -- before the year's over, the Cambridges will go on a royal tour with their children. Don't get us wrong, we love seeing William and Kate, but those little kiddos are something else.
