This doesn't sound good ... at all. Britney Spears and Kevin Federline have been involved in a pretty public custody battle over their sons for some time. And with Kevin seeking additional child support from the pop princess -- reportedly threatening to go to court if need be -- it was only a matter of time before 'ish really hit the fan. Welp, Britney Spears was just subpoenaed in the name of discussing "her personal finances," and heaven only knows how nasty this thing is going to get.

  • Kevin is playing no games when it comes to increasing his $20,000 monthly child support payment as Brit was just summoned "to sit for a deposition."

"Her lawyer, Laura Wasser, accepted the subpoena on Britney's behalf," a source exclusively told Us Weekly about Kevin and Britney's child support saga. "The subpoena also included financial discovery, including Britney's most recent tax returns, and a completed income and expense declaration."

  • Kevin filed court documents on May 22, requesting an increase in his payments as he believes it's not enough for their sons, Sean, 12, and Jayden, 11.

"I work as a DJ. My income this year is approximately $3,000 per month, which I earn by traveling to various entertainment venues around the country and providing musical entertainment," Kevin Federline allegedly stated in a declaration about needing more money, The Blast reports. "My income has changed significantly since the child support was last modified in approximately 2008 because I no longer earn a six-figure income like I did in 2008. I am no longer able to perform as a dancer due to my age, and I have not been as successful in putting out new music as I was in 2008. I am simply less of a 'name' and less in demand than I was in 2008, which has negatively affected my income."

  • "We gave them ample time and opportunity to settle Kevin’s child support modification increase," Mark Vincent Kaplan, Kevin's attorney, told Us.

"It's their position that they don't have to turn over Britney's financial information, including tax returns, which is required under the California family code," he continued about Kevin Federline pursuing legal action. It's not California celebrity code edition, she has to comply. This is the choice they have made, and they will now have to deal with it. We are still open to try and settling this without judicial intervention."

  • Mark feels Kevin deserves "at least three times the amount" of child support he's getting -- especially because Britney is so wealthy.

Britney Spears's net worth continues to be the center of discussion as she increased her coinage by $174 million since her 2008 arrangement with Federline.

  • And with Kevin "rejecting" Britney's child support offer back in March, who knows what will happen.

"Jamie [Britney's father] and Britney Spears sent a response to Kevin's request for an increase to his child support payments, to his lawyer, Mark Vincent Kaplan," a source exclusively told Us Weekly about Kevin rejecting her camp's offer. "Kevin has flatly rejected it .... Meeting with Jamie Spears, along with his lawyer, Mark Vincent Kaplan, Kevin laid out the reasons why he was requesting the increase for child support payments. Kevin is tremendously disappointed that the offer was rejected, but is prepared to proceed."

  • We just hope everyone can get on the same page.

... for the sake of the children involved.
