Damned if she does, damned if she doesn't. When Meghan Markle did her post-engagement photo call with Prince Harry, the Suits actress was criticized for not wearing nude pantyhose, as that tends to be the royal standard (See: Kate Middleton and Queen Elizabeth). However! On Monday, Meghan did wear pantyhose to the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey and guess what? She was still criticized!

  • Perhaps she was taking a cue from her future sister-in-law or perhaps she just wanted to keep her legs toasty in the cold weather, but eagle-eyed fans were quick to notice that, this go 'round, Meghan was wearing hose.

It's no secret that Kate Middleton's legs have been quite the topic of conversation over the years, so it's always kind of a shame that she, and now Meghan, choose to cover them up.

While the Queen and Duchess tend to rock pantyhose no matter the occasion, there's evidently no hard and fast rule when it comes to wearing them -- according to some.

"Although pantyhose are not required for every event, they are generally a rule for more formal or conservative royal events," Christine Ross of the website Meghan's Mirror told E! Online. "The perception is that pantyhose are more modest and feminine, but given how chilly London can be, it may be a practical choice more than anything."

Royal expert Victoria Arbiter had a different story, though. She told Insider: "You never see a royal without their nude stockings. Meghan, from what I can see from the engagement photographs, it doesn't look like she was wearing tights or stockings. I would say that's really the only hard, steadfast rule in terms of what the Queen requires."

  • While it's likely that the Queen -- and royal sticklers -- appreciated Meghan's decision to cover her legs, some found the accessory "not that cool."

When you're a royal, you just can't win.

  • Perhaps the reason Meghan has been able to get away with going sans pantyhose -- which, let's be honest, don't really seem like her style -- is because she's not officially a royal yet.

But a small silver lining for having to add them to her wardrobe repertoire is that fact that, more often than not, she may be twinning from the waist down with Kate Middleton.

That's always a good thing, now isn't it?
