The expression "it's called a breakup because it's broken" may be of some comfort to anyone who is broken-hearted and wants reassurance that their relationship is irreparable. But as famous couples in Hollywood continue to show, a breakup may actually just be a break. To quote Selena Gomez, who knows this to be the case, the "heart wants what it wants," and sometimes, that's to get back together with an ex.

Of course, Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber's reunion is proof positive of this.

Love is a mysterious and miraculous thing, and just because a person has reached celebrity status doesn't mean that person is immune to the complexities of it all.

Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber have been on-again and off-again since they were just kids. The pair was officially in the spotlight as an item in 2011, before breaking up in November 2012 and dating other stars (Selena was with the Weeknd, Justin was with Sofia Richie). But in late 2017, Selena split from the Weeknd and was quickly rumored to be back with Justin. Most recently they were spied celebrating Valentine's Day 2018 together in Laguna Beach.

  • Orlando Bloom & Katy Perry

After dating for a little over a year, Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry announced in February 2017 that they were "taking respectful, loving space." And over the past year, Orlando was rumored to be getting cozy with Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev. But new reports say Katy and Orlando are back together, having been spied on a recent trip to the Maldives.

"They're back on," a source told the Sun. "Katy wants to make things work this time around. She tried, but she couldn't cut him off. She cares too much about him. This time, they’re keeping things low key -- but they're back together."

  • Katy Perry & John Mayer

They may be ancient history now -- what with Katy reportedly being back together with Orlando -- but at one time, the on-again, off-again drama in Katy's life was with John Mayer. The drama-loving pair became offish in summer of 2012, but split, got back together in 2013, and broke up again in February 2014; Katy was then rumored to be dating Diplo that summer. That fizzled, before Katy was said to be back with John once more, and the two reportedly called it quits once and for all in 2015. Whew!

These days, they're one of America's biggest celeb couple crushes. But about three months into dating, Dax called it quits on Kristen. "He sat me down and said, 'I can't have this right now. I think you're wonderful, but I am still dating other people,'" Kristen told PopSugar. "And then I, like, liquefied and fell to the ground, but I felt incredibly respected that he had the balls to tell me we weren't in the same place."

Dax soon realized the egregious error he was making, broke up with the other person he was seeing, and told Kristen: "I don't know what I was thinking. I was dating someone else but they're just not as interesting as you, and I don't know what I'm doing.'" Kristen says, "I still always remind him of when he broke up with me." Ha!
