17 Times Kate Middleton Looked Like She Needed a Friend

They say it's lonely at the top, and we have to be honest here: Sometimes, Kate Middleton looks seriously lonesome. Sure, she's always got Prince William and a flurry of handlers by her side, but that's not the same as a friend. A bestie. A partner in crime. She may have the world at her fingertips, but what the duchess really needs is a tried-and-true wingwoman.

We're assuming Kate has friends -- perhaps maybe even a best friend! -- behind closed doors (aside from Pippa). But whenever we see her on official royal business, she's solo. This, of course, is completely understandable, being that royal engagements don't often require a "plus one." But if we're being frank, sometimes the duchess just looks like she could use a gal pal alongside of her.

From looking lost while walking around by herself to private moments in the woods with just her dog to, well, kind of seeming like the third wheel when she's hanging with Will and Harry, here are 17 times Kate looked like she'd needed a friend. May we kindly volunteer ourselves for this role? We're cool. We're smart. And we have no problem playing second fiddle 24:7. Oh, and there's a best friend charm involved. Just saying.

That awkward moment when Prince William is nowhere to be seen and Prince Harry is mid-conversation with someone. It's OK, Kate. We've all been there.

  • Dude, Wait Up

A downside to being a royal: Kate can't use her phone as a social crutch when her husband races ahead to talk to someone else while she's left standing there.

When regular people are standing alone with a drink at a party, it's awkward. But when Kate does it ... is it regal?

  • Keep Calm & Carry On

Does Kate even known these two top-hatted men sitting in front of her? Doubtful. Hence, her averted glance and "please don't talk to me" smile.

  • Sometimes lambs = friends

No one around to talk to? It's OK. As long as there's a hungry baby lamb nearby.

  • Solo Photos

Kate would be much happier in this shot if she had a friend in the photo with her. Posing with friends > posing alone.

  • Friend Spotting

"Wait, is that a friend over there?"

No, Kate, it's not a friend. It's just a tree.

Even royals can't pull of the "casually leaning against the car" move solo. Nobody does that IRL.

  • Into the Woods

Technically, Lupo is Kate's buddy in this photo, but doesn't really count as a "real" friend since he's not human.

What's there left for Kate to do when her husband and brother-in-law are in the middle of a cuddle puddle with the Obamas? Stand there and smile, of course.

Contemplating whether or not she should try to get into an awkward conversation with a rando or just stay off to the side.

Stay off to the side it is.

Another day, another baby animal feeding frenzy for Kate. Instead of, well, talking to people.
