Just when you think the good citizens of this planet would finally put "when they go low, we go high" into practice, the Interwebs delivers the rude awakening that rachetness is alive, fed, and extremely well. People are actually feuding over how Monica and Brandy honored the late Whitney Houston's birthday -- for the dumbest reason ever.

  • Because, apparently, Instagram isn't big enough for two R&B divas to remember one of the greatest voices of all time.

The "Boy Is Mine" singers -- who took home the Grammy in 1999 for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group -- have reportedly had an on-again, off-again feud over the years.

  • Monica was the first to send Whitney "heavenly birthday" wishes on the 'Gram August 9.

"Happy Heavenly Birthday Nippy ..." the singer captioned in her post. "You still inspire many & touch hearts daily ... You will forever be the greatest .... You will forever be missed."

  • Brandy shared her memories of her former "Cinderella" costar on Instagram hours later.

"Lord have mercy on my soul!!!" Brandy wrote in her post.

"Happy Born Day Whitney. You live on in me ... I can feel your Spirit inside of me and all around me. My angel, my friend, my fairy God Mother. I love you forever... thank you for trusting me with the torch!!! I remember every moment with you and I and I will cherish these miraculous moments forever and ever! I love you.... 8/9-2/11"

  • She then followed up her original post with three more Instagram shares that turned heads.

"Nippy, I wanted to be exactly like you ... mannerisms and all..." Brandy revealed in a video throwback post of her singing. "I didn't have your range but everything else I could do that you did I tried to do. Then it dawned on me, I can never do what you did exactly the way you did it and then I found myself being like myself because of everything you taught me!"

  • Once people noticed Brandy's posts, they fired at will.

  • Some folks are #TeamMonica and feel Brandy is simply trying to steal her shine.

  • #TeamMonica also believes that Monica's Whitney post actually focuses on Whitney, while Brandy's ... not so much.

  • Others came to Brandy's defense quicker than you can say "clapback" in attempts to put both Monica and her fans in their place.

  • And just when you thought this messy situation couldn't get messier, Brandy got caught writing a scripture-length read to Monica's fans.

"Monica needs to check her evil a** fans ..." Brandy writes in a now deleted Instagram comment.

".... Always thinking something is about her. It's not!!!! It's never until it was and I was very clear when it was but I did it within my job meaning with my vocals !!! Sh*t is old. Me and Whitney have nothing to do with anyone but the two of us ... we made history and I cared more about being with her than I did about anything else."

  • Yup, so done with the Internet today.

  • Whitney, God rest her soul, is likely turning in her grave -- cursing us all out in her effortless vibrato -- for being so damn stupid.

This foolishness right here is exactly why we can't have nice things in 2017.

  • Then again, the Prom Queen of Soul never shied away from throwing shade herself, so who knows.
