Meghan Markle may already have an in with the royal family, but it took William around five years to introduce Kate Middleton to Queen Elizabeth. That said, from the sound of things, the meeting was totally worth the wait.

Despite the fact that there were numerous opportunities for the queen to meet the now-duchess, the women didn't meet for quite some time, as PopSugar points out: They reportedly were together at three different occasions before they were introduced, and at each of those occasions, they had zero interaction.

William and Kate were thought to be together at William's 21st birthday party, but the women weren't introduced then -- and, tbh, it was very early in their relationship, so totally understandable. Then, two years later when they graduated from St. Andrews (and had already been through their first breakup), the queen still didn't meet William's then-girlfriend. A little odd, but again, sort of understandable. Apparently, the queen felt that the momentous day should be about William celebrating with his friends, and she felt the same way during his passing out parade from Sandhurst Military Academy in 2006.

Eventually, though, it was time. When it seemed like William and Kate were the real deal and were in it for the long haul, William introduced her to his grandmother at a wedding. In their engagement video, the duchess revealed, "I first met [the queen] at Peter Phillips's and Autumn Philipps's wedding ... it was in amongst a lot of other guests and she was very friendly." William then added that his grandmother "wanted to meet Kate for a while."

Kate apparently made a good impression on the queen, because about a month later she was invited to Windsor Castle when William was inducted into the Royal Order of the Garter.

Over the years, Kate and the queen have appeared to grow much closer and seem to get on quite well. As the saying goes, good things come to those who wait.
