Joy-Anna Duggar's Family Worries She Was Too Young to Get Married

Joy-Anna Duggar and Austin Forsyth

Did her family have reservations before she walked down the aisle? Joy-Anna Duggar and Austin Forsyth tied the knot last month, but it looks like they may have had some issues convincing her family that she was ready.

In a new clip for Counting On, Austin asks Jim Bob Duggar for permission to marry his 19-year-old daughter. The two had been courting for several months, and it had been nearly a year since Austin asked his future father-in-law "to get to know Joy on a closer friendship level."

While Austin, 24, may have felt ready to ask for Joy's hand in marriage, it seems as though both families may have been a little hesitant. In an interview for the camera, Jessa (Duggar) Seewald said, "Joy is 19, so she's the youngest one of all of us girls so far to be in a courtship -- and now on the edge of an engagement."

The 24-year-old mom of two continued, "I think it's sort of young, but she's very mature for her age and they've known each other for a long time. So I think she and Austin are ready for this next step whenever it comes about."

As for Austin's family, he admitted to Jim Bob that his own father had a deal about his fixing up and selling a house to prove his worth as a husband before he could marry Joy-Anna.

He nervously explained to the Duggar patriarch as he asked for his permission to wed his daughter. "It's a good thing you stopped by today, because I've been wanting to talk to you about something ... Well, you know this is my fifth house and [I have a] commitment with my dad about selling it before I can get married. I really know that the Lord has brought Joy and I's path together, and I've seen him working firsthand -- I wanted to ask for your blessing for her hand in marriage."

In typical Jim Bob fashion, he didn't give Austin an immediate answer, just a delayed, "Wow." He also called it "a big step," and looked like he had every intention of making Austin sweat a little.

Ben Seewald claimed that this is how it's been with Jim Bob's other sons-in-law, saying, "He'll look down and say: 'Well...' I don't know if he's just having a little fun with the moment or if he's just genuinely thinking through it. He never just says: 'Sure!'"

Of course, whatever hesitancy the families had, it was obviously cleared up, since Joy and Austin made it to the altar last month. We wish them a lifetime of happiness!
