Leave it to Kim Kardashian to stir up controversy when promoting her new makeup line. After the Selfish author released a promotional photo of herself last week wearing some of the makeup from her new line, Kim was accused of wearing blackface. In the photo, the mom of two has a much darker skin tone than she normally does, and, understandably, people on social media had some choice words for her.

Shortly after releasing the photo, Kim deleted it, but it was shared again later. And as of now, the photo remains Kim's profile photo on Twitter.

Numerous people tweeted to Kim about darkening the color of her skin in order to sell makeup products, while a few held Photoshop and/or the sun accountable for the drastic change in Kim's complexion.

More from CafeMom:

Normally one to remain silent when it comes to her controversies, Kim surprised everyone by responding to the accusations. In an interview with the New York Times published Monday, Kim addressed the controversy, saying, "I would obviously never want to offend anyone. I used an amazing photographer and a team of people. I was really tan when we shot the images, and it might be that the contrast was off. But I showed the image to many people, to many in the business. No one brought that to our attention. No one mentioned it."

Kim then added that, despite not initially knowing she did anything wrong, she learned from her experience and won't do it again. "Of course, I have the utmost respect for why people might feel the way they did," she said. "But we made the necessary changes to that photo and the rest of the photos. We saw the problem, and we adapted and changed right away. Definitely I have learned from it."

Good for her. But it's still unclear why the initial photo is her Twitter pic.
