13 Celeb Diet 'Tricks' -- From Kinda Wacky to Way Restrictive

Let's get real. We all say that we want to lose those annoying five pounds and don't. But when looks are a big part of your job, as it is for most celebrities, you really have no choice -- or time. And that combination leads to some pretty extreme measures, usually in the forms of restrictive diets or strange food choices that would have a normal person giving major side eye. (Seriously, ain't nobody got time for that!) But we guess that's the price of being a star. And, hell, who are we to judge?!

From eating habits that are a little (okay, really) bizarre -- like color coding the meals that you eat each day -- to following diets that consist of only fruit, here are some of the wackiest things that celebs have done in the name of staying in shape or transforming themselves for the camera.

  • Fergie

A few shots of vinegar per day apparently keep the pounds away for Fergie. The "Life Goes On" singer explained in a 2008 interview that she took two tablespoon shots of organic apple cider vinegar, unfiltered, at the recommendation of her then trainer, Natasha Kufa. It supposedly helps curb the cravings and aid in digestion. Bottoms up if you can stomach it. More power to you, girl!

  • Mariah Carey

    Splash News

Being a pop diva is hard work, which is also hard on your diet. When recently asked how she keeps her figure intact, Mariah Carey confessed: "It's really hard. My diet, you would hate it. You don't need it. All you eat is Norwegian salmon and capers every day. That's it." The 44-year-old didn't offer up any more info, but we'll just let her do her thing (and we'll do ours).

  • Ashton Kutcher

When prepping to play the role of Steve Jobs, Ashton Kutcher took the practice of method acting to heart. He adopted the late tech giant's fruitarian diet, a restrictive diet that consists of mainly fruits, and unfortunately ended up in the hospital due to pancreatic issues. Talk about a shock to the system! Kutcher eventually went on to film Jobs, but there hasn't been mention of his practicing the diet since. Phew.

  • Adriana Lima

Adriana Lima made headlines for her pre–Victoria's Secret Fashion show routine. In 2011, the model admitted that she stuck to a diet consisting of only liquids (yes, really!) nine days before walking the runway. Then, she stopped drinking water 12 hours prior to the show. She compared the diet to athletic training and said, "After this show, I become normal again." We would be ravenous, but that's just us.

  • Kourtney Kardashian

Some people take vitamins to get their essential nutrients, while others -- like Kourtney Kardashian -- take placenta pills to get some of those same benefits. It's no surprise to Keeping Up With the Kardashians fans that Kourt is a fan of the eat-your-placenta movement. And she happily shared her tastes via Instagramcaptioning the post, "Yummy…PLACENTA pills! No joke…I will be sad when my placenta pills run out. They are life changing! #benefits #lookitup."

  • Shailene Woodley

Let them eat ... dirt. It looks like actress Shailene Woodley went back to the playground roots and decided that a little clay in her diet wouldn't hurt. The star appeared on The Late Show With David Letterman and explained why she includes a little clay in her diet -- and even her toothpaste. The Divergent star went on to talk about the various benefits, such as clay's "binding" certain materials and helping to flush out things like heavy metals in the body. That's all well and good, but like Letterman pointed out, there are other things out there to help with that, too.

  • Beyonce

    Splash News

Beyonce revealed that the Master Cleanse was responsible for her dropping 20 pounds to play Deena in Dreamgirls. This detox cleanse, which is done for about 10 days, is a liquid diet that consists of hot water, lemon juice, cayenne pepper, and maple syrup that you have to drink several times a day (along with eating vegetables). Well, Queen Bey definitely gets the crown for willpower.

  • Reese Witherspoon

    Splash News

Reese Witherspoon is rumored to be among the ranks of celebs that were once gaga for the baby food diet, which entails eating about 14 jars of baby food per day ... though there is the option of having one low-calorie meal within the day. Perhaps leave the baby food to the kiddos?

  • Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway shed around 25 total pounds for Les Mis by following what many would call a starvation diet. At one point, the Devil Wears Prada star reportedly ate two small pieces of oatmeal paste a day. "I had to be obsessive about it -- the idea was to look near death," Hathaway said in an interview with Vogue when discussing her character, Fantine. And that's pretty much how we'd image she felt enduring this diet. No, thank you.

Christina Aguliera is reportedly one celeb who has tried the seven-day color diet, a meal plan that (you guessed it) only allows you to eat foods of one color each day. Seen as a way to get you eating more fruits and vegetables, this diet gives a whole new meaning to the practice of color coordinating. Helpful or a hoax? We'd rather not find out.

  • Christian Bale

    WeirPhotos/Splash News

Christian Bale lost 60 pounds for his role to play an anorexic insomniac in The Machinist, which isn't surprising since his limited diet basically consisted of an apple a day. There were also reports of things thrown in like cigaretts, coffee, and a can of tuna. Talk about suffering for your art!

  • Miranda Kerr

    @ParisaMichelle/Splash News

Just put a little coconut oil on it. At least, that's what Miranda Kerr does. The model all but swears by the power of coconut oil. She reportedly swallows a spoonful of the unrefined stuff in the morning and even puts some in her tea. Supposedly, it helps fight off the bloat and helps the digestion process. While the benefits are obviously still in question, it seems Kerr's found her miracle oil.

  • Katy Perry

    Splash News

'Shroom's the word. According to reports, Katy Perry was once a follower of the M-Plan -- M meaning mushrooms (of course) -- which replaces one meal a day with raw mushrooms over the course of two weeks. Well, the low-calorie fungus is rich with vitamins and nutrients, but whether or not the "Firework" singer was actually getting anything aside from a much-needed boost of veggies is debatable. Though, replacing that burger with a plate of veggies surely couldn't hurt.
