Considering that 2016 was a brutal year, we almost feel like we shouldn't be surprised that the final holiday weekend brought more heartbreak. But we never expected this: Legendary pop star (and half of Wham!) George Michael died on Christmas morning. His partner, Fadi Fawaz, spoke up about some of the details of Michael's death one day later on December 26.

Details are still being released, but Fadi, who's been romantically linked to George for five years, said he found the singer early December 25 -- Fadi went to wake George up and he found his body laying peacefully in bed:

Fadi spoke to the Daily Telegraph and mentioned he wasn't there when George passed. He elaborated:

We were supposed to be going for Christmas lunch. I went round there to wake him up and he was just gone, lying peacefully in bed. We don't know what happened yet. Everything had been very complicated recently, but George was looking forward to Christmas, and so was I. Now everything is ruined. I want people to remember him the way he was -- he was a beautiful person.

Andrew Ridgeley, the other half of Wham! (the group that gave us the now incredibly sad song "Last Christmas"), and Elton John also both spoke out about George's death:

Learning that a loved one has died is one of everybody's worst fears, so our hearts go out to Fadi and George Michael's friends and family -- it's a terrible loss, and we can't imagine what they're feeling right now. Especially during the holidays. Especially when it seemed to be so sudden.

Britain's Thames Valley Police confirmed George Michael's death, stating, "At this stage the death is being treated as unexplained but not suspicious."

As for cause of death, all we know so far is what George's manager, Michael Lippman, told the Press Association. He said that George died of heart failure and released a statement from the legend's family: "It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period." That's all we know for now -- and, hopefully, we'll find out more soon.

Whatever the cause, George Michael's passing is hard to take -- in a year of heartbreaking deaths, this one stands out. Not only was George a force in the music industry thanks to hits like "Faith" and "Freedom! '90," but he was also an icon and advocate for the LGBT community and a major philanthropist. He supported causes like fighting HIV/AIDS and famine relief and even allegedly worked anonymously at a homeless shelter in the UK, and everything he gave added to his incredible legacy. He did seem, as his partner stated, like a "beautiful person."

We're hoping for peace for his friends and family.
