Did Meghan Markle Take a Swipe at Kate Middleton's 'Vogue' Issue?
Despite their lovely appearance together at Wimbledon a few weeks ago, followed by a royal playdate days later, the supposed feud between Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton has been reignited. Well, at least, it's being talked about once more after a seemingly innocuous remark was made by the Duchess of Sussex.
Here we go again!
As the entire world now knows, Meghan Markle guest-edited the famed September issue of British Vogue.
The Duchess of Sussex took the opportunity to highlight causes and people that are near and dear to her and Prince Harry's heart.
In an Instagram post, previewing the issue, Meghan said:
"Guest editing the September issue of British Vogue has been rewarding, educational and inspiring. To deep dive into this process, working quietly behind the scenes for so many months, I am happy to now be able to share what we have created. A huge thanks to all of the friends who supported me in this endeavor, lending their time and energy to help within these pages and on the cover. Thank you for saying “Yes!” - and to Edward, thank you for this wonderful opportunity."
Seems innocent enough, right? Apparently not.
Evidently, Meghan was initially asked to APPEAR on the cover of the magazine, but declined.
Her reason? It felt braggadocious .
In a statement, editor-in-chief Edward Enninful said:
"To have the country’s most influential beacon of change guest edit British Vogue at this time has been an honor, a pleasure and a wonderful surprise. As you will see from her selections throughout this magazine, she is also willing to wade into more complex and nuanced areas, whether they concern female empowerment, mental health, race or privilege. From the very beginning, we talked about the cover -- whether she would be on it or not. In the end, she felt that it would be in some ways a 'boastful' thing to do for this particular project. She wanted, instead, to focus on the women she admires."
Lest you forget, the Duchess of Cambridge appeared on the cover of Vogue for its centenary issue in 2016.
Was Meghan taking a swipe at Kate's Vogue cover by saying it was "boastful"? Eh, the wording from Enninful wasn't ideal, but even so, we don't think this was duchess on duchess crime.
Not only was Kate's Vogue cover five years after she joined the royal family, it was the first -- and only -- official cover the duchess ever posed for. Meghan graced the cover of Vanity Fair while she was still dating Harry, so clearly she doesn't think magazine covers in general are tacky -- perhaps she just meant posing for one so soon after becoming a member of the royal family would be in bad taste.
