Naomi Watts & Liev Schreiber Say They're Splitting Up -- & Breaking Our Hearts

naomi watts, liev schreiberYet another celeb couple has decided to call it quits -- and nobody saw this one coming: Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts announced this week that they're ending their relationship, which began in 2005. Though the couple never married, they have two sons together (9-year-old Sasha and 7-year-old Samuel), and recently costarred in the movie The Bleeder. In fact, at the premiere for that film just weeks ago, Schreiber sang his partner's praises like a man very much in love ... so what happened?

A joint statement from the pair doesn't tell us much:

Over the past few months we've come to the conclusion that the best way forward for us as a family is to separate as a couple. It is with great love, respect and friendship in our hearts that we look forward to raising our children together and exploring this new phase of our relationship. While we appreciate your curiosity and support, we ask the press to be mindful of our children and respect their right to privacy.

First Angie and Brad, now these two? What's going on in Hollywood?! There is one major difference between these two breakups, however: While rumors of relationship strife plagued Brangelina pretty much from the minute they got together, 47-year-old Watts and 48-year-old Schreiber pretty much flew under the gossip radar for the course of their 11-year union. Of course, now that the cat's out of the bag, so-called anonymous sources are coming out of the woodwork with claims that the actors have been "on the rocks for a while." (In retrospect, was their impending split the reason why Schreiber brought son Sasha to the Emmys on September 18 instead of Watts?)

Either way, this news makes looking back on Schreiber's comments from less than a month ago (to Us Weekly) about his experience working with Watts on The Bleeder particularly sad:

It's all about patience, and we got lucky enough to work together. I think just being kind, patient and having quiet nights in together is the best for us.

It was great, I had someone to run lines with, there's clearly a level of familiarity and that really helped us.

Why, guys, why?! This is definitely a disappointing turn of events, but at least one thing is apparent: There seems to be genuine goodwill and affection between these two, and that will only make co-parenting easier (and should make the transition smoother for their kids, too). If there's a silver lining to be found here, it's definitely the lack of scandalous accusations!
